Sorry if this has been asked before, but I'm thinking of incorporating a protein shake or bar for after training... I'm wondering which is better bar or shake form... Can any one make any recommendations... One thing thats put me of is I have heard they can be over sweet / chalky etc etc and take a while to get used to... And do I really need to add them.
thanks in advance H

Are you having trouble reaching your protein goal? Because otherwise, protein shakes aren't necessary.
I personally enjoy Trutein Chocolate PB Cup protein powder or Optimum Nutrition Extreme Milk Chocolate protein powder.0 -
The shakes will be digested faster and get into your system quicker for post workout recovery. As for being too sweet or chalky, just try out a couple brands. Some people are really picky about them but just think of it as nutrition and not a treat.
Do you need to add them? You don't have to but they do help with muscle retention and repair after a hard workout. This is one of the proven things that actually works and isn't a gimmick. It's a good way to get extra protein in your diet without having to eat tons of chicken, fish, etc.0 -
Definitely shake. There's a ton of garbage in protein bars.0

^^this
There may be a possible benefit of getting some protein sometime around your workout, but food will do. Shakes and bars are fine if protein in the form of food is not convenient.0 -
I started lifting 3 x a week and swim 2 x a week I have weekends of as its the only time I have with my little one ... I already eat a ton of fish chicken and eggs and vary between hitting it and being 40 under... Im still playing around with my macros but know i need to up my fat and protein levels. I came of the Dukan diet because I wanted a more long term and sustainable diet so switched to more balanced with a few treats.
So seems shakes maybe a good thing to add, sorry just trying to figure all of this out now0 -

Sounds like you have a good plan.
I find protein powder a really good fall back that stops me stressing about getting my protein from food sources and therefore makes planning the day much easier and allows my diet to be much more flexible.0 -
I get my protein shake powder from holland and barret. I like their own brand0

Powder, preferably Gold Standard. The bars are just candy with protein in em, terrible macros to rely on daily.0

Again thank you all once again... I recalculated my macros last night as I switched to the TDEE - 20% and taking into account my lean body mass and the protein required I definitely need to up the protein levels. So a protein shake Is going to be important to incorporate.
Thank you for all the suggestions going to try a couple that have been suggested and see how that fits in and helps me hit the macros set.
Have a great day0 -
Designer Whey vanilla
I can mix it with just almond milk or regular milk and it tastes just fine as long as you blend it or have a shaker ball in your cup.
Also vanilla is easy, you can change it up, add berries, cocoa powder, peanut butter, flax or chia and on and on ....
Their ARIA one is chalky!0
