Hello! I am trying to find suggestions for exercises that can be done for weight loss with a bad back and knees. I have a 2 level fusion (L4-S1) and a disk that is trying to herniate (L3). I still want/need to workout and lose weight, but I'm having a hard time finding something that will work. I have worked with a couple of trainers, but the exercise bike gets old after a while. I have tried the treadmill, but after a certain amount of time my back starts to spasm and I'm done for two or three days until I get the flare-up to subside.

Any suggestions or thoughts?? :/

Swimming! Low impact but an excellent workout.

I'd suggest discussing safe exercises with the doctor who diagnosed or is treating these conditions.

    I'd suggest a Physiotherapist
but in the meantime Swimming and/or water exercise class.
What about biking outside? So much more fun going places rather than the stationary bike.

Look up chair workouts on you tube as well.

How long ago was the fusion? I have had 4 back surgeries and a ruptured brain aneurysm... don't assume you can't do it. It took me a LONG time (until recently which is about 2 years) after the aneurysm to even remotely try exercising again (mental game). I do strength training even with the back and it actually helps instead of hinders. My back surgeries were a long time ago which is why I asked how long ago you had them. Know your body and whatever exercise you do adjust as needed. Strength training is my favorite as I am not a fan of cardio very much lol I have to force myself to do it so I swim for my "cardio" since I have a pool :)
