My doctors told me to eat what I liked! Bad advice.
Mending broken bones will increase your energy requirements. I'd up my limit by 100cals a day and see how that feels. Make sure your diet is balanced with every major food group i.e. Lean protein, wholemeal carbs, veg, dairy and fruit. Don't go low carb or anything like that. You need every food group to build bones.
Don't worry about muscle loss. It'll come back once you start moving again.
Try walking to keep active. It should be fine if your arm is in a sling.
Pain killers can halt weight loss, so until the plaster is off don't worry if your rate of loss goes down a bit.
Bad luck - time to read a few good books!1 -
Last October, I was doing hill repeats on my bike. A car came through a red light toward me and I could see it wasn't going to stop in time. Then I woke up in the middle of the road and a guy was telling me that I should get out of the street if I can walk. Next thing I remember is sort of collapsing on the sidewalk. It was drizzling and the sidewalk was very cold. One of the doctors in the emergency room told me that just because I was able to get up and walk to the bathroom to pee didn't mean my neck wasn't broken; he was ordering a CT scan but I broke down and cried when I heard that. Luckily, nothing was broken except the bike, it took months to heal but I did.
I lost weight through that period. I did almost no exercise because even with the pain meds, walking was unbearable for a few weeks. I ate a lot less, probably because I was so depressed. I mean, I've been a cyclist all my life, I missed it more than anything, there were tears of joy when I finally got a new one.
I'm sorry you're going through this. I hope you make a full recovery. Try to always remember that this is temporary and will get better.1
