training legs twice a week?

Hello all, I was thinking of training legs twice for 2-3 weeks, I have tendinitis in my left elbow, I was going to rest for 2-3 weeks and see, I was thinking of doing 1 leg day which will be my normal leg workout, the 2nd leg workout will be all machines just isolation.

I think that sounds reasonable. I had to rest my wrists for about a month to get them to heal up. You do what you can do while healing the part you temporarily can't use.

Tons of programs let you train legs 2-3 times per week. Hell, there are squat programs where you train every day.

You could train legs 3 times a week or even more if you wanted to. It is a good idea to modulate the volume and intensity so that each training session is different and so that some of the sessions are easier to recover from.

I would recommend squatting be your main (or even your only) lift

Yup, one theory being that the squat is such a natural movement that it is pretty tough to overtrain using it as your main focus.

I was going to squat on the 1st leg session, would it be wise to squat twice a week or leave it to once a week.

Everyday is leg day for me. Right now it's three squat days and two deadlift days.

I've built up to be able to handle my volume load. Even then, my legs are toast by Friday.

No problem doing legs 2-3,times a week. Instead of machines how about single leg exercises. Work thr stabilizing muscles, improve balance, etc.

I do two leg days (lower body days) and on one of my upper body days I also deadlift.

When I was still competing and gaining mass, I trained legs 2 times a week. It's not uncommon.

You can still probably do some unilateral training in your arms as well if your are still interested in it. And if the MD provides you with and AROM or specific exercises, follow his programming. Just because there is an injury does not mean we need to stop training specific areas; there are always ways to adapt.

You can also do legs twice if you wish, but I thought I would just add my 2 cents.

You could train legs Multiple times a week, It's hard for a few weeks, then is easier to manage. Mix up Weight and rep ranges to adapt..

However, just one thing that i have to ask, Why squat if you have a bad elbow? That could get flared up and cause more issues... Of course, i don't know if your elbow does get flared up on squats, but still, worth asking..

Just as I answered to your back 2x a week post. Yes training any body part two times a week is no problem, as long as your diet is up to par and you're getting adequate rest 2x a week will yield much better results than a 1x a week program.

Program I'm on, 531, has a heavy squat day and a volume squat day. Tuesday is volume, Friday is heavy, which is a good thing as it gives Sat and Sun to recuperate.

The training program I have been given is all upper body twice a week and all lower body twice a week, but sometimes I throw in an extra day when I have time. I can't see why you can't train just your lower body.

I usually do legs twice a week [one pure lifting day to raise strength, one pure cardio day to raise endurance], though recently suspended the lifting day due to a new job where the legs get a lot of lifting exercise anyways [several hours of lifting and moving 25+ pound boxes of product]. Removing the lifting day is temporary: I just don't want to risk injuring my legs again due to overexercise.

Oh, with the elbow, you could substitute leg press for squats while it heals.

Everybody's body and training programs can differ greatly, but as mentioned it's not uncommon to train legs often. The past 3 years of my current program I've done 3-4 times a week but deload quite a bit for joint/tendon preventive maintenance.

Also agreed that squatting could of caused your elbow problems. You might consider a wider grip when you resume along with mobility work.

You could also use a safety bar if that is available which would allow you to still squat without flaring the elbows tendinitis worse.

I'm trying to think of a time I didn't train legs at least twice per week...never. Right now I'm focused on strength so I'm already squatting 3x per week, but most of my lower accessory work is dedicated to the bunz. If I were to have two leg days, one would be in the strength/power range, and one would be more islolation work in the hypertrophy range.
