Didn't know this muscle existed..

So I'm basically average build but I've always had a bad muffin top I wanted to get rid of. So lately I've been dieting and exercising to get rid of it and tone up. Well yesterday I went hard, and today I woke up and my hips hurt. I recently discovered obliques were a thing but TODAY, in my soreness, I discovered that internal obliques were a thing. Does this mean I'm on my way to losing my muffin top? or is this my body telling me to cool it? I already did my work out today and went hard again, ending with some stretching and suspect they'll hurt even more tomorrow. It's not debilitating or anything (as of now) but should I keep going or take an extra day off? Should I continue to feel proud or take an easy?

Soreness doesn't really indicate much of anything useful, sadly. But be careful not to mistake an injury for a muscle strain &c

Unfortunately all it means is that you've hit a muscle (group) you haven't hit before. Once you get more used to doing whatever it is that you're doing, you shouldn't get too sore.

You definitely don't want to be pushing too hard. Sore is OK, painful is bad. Taking the weekend for a rest probably wouldn't be a bad idea.

If it hurts, rest a day or so before working those muscles again.

I have been hitting my obliques pretty hard the past few weeks and it HURTS! I am pretty fit as I workout 5x a week for 90 mins, and it STILL hurts LOL!!

Neither. It just means you worked the muscle harder than it was used to. Working a muscle doesn't target the fat layer next to it. For more on that, google "spot reduction myth".

Which strength program are you following?

I honestly don't follow a program which I know isn't recommended, I just haven't found one I really like. I workout in my apartment so can't do any jumping or anything. I just do multiple workouts that target different parts of my body (thighs, calfs, butt, abs, obliques, arms and back) using no weights/weights/and an exercise ball. (Push ups, sit ups, weightlifting, oblique twists, calf raises, squats, and so on..) I've just combined a bunch of exercises I've found and do them all for 30-45 minutes 5-6 days a week.

Get a programme if you want to maximise effectiveness

Although your way will work too

I used to be a military master fitness trainer and you are absolutely right - sore is fine; pain is bad. Remember, give yourself time to get into shape. It will happen; you need to be patient. :)

Exercise a certain area doesn't equate to losing fat in that area. Actually it can seem to do the opposite with water retention.

    One loses fat by diet.

    Probably just doms.

And to add, working certain areas will build muscle and make you look larger. Losing the overlaying fat is what you really want.

Muffin tops are a combination of too tight of clothing, excess fat and skin. That's it. Only way to lessen that is to lower total body fat or wear looser clothing.

So if you're sore from a different training regimen, that's not useful to know that you trained muscles that aren't that conditioned?
