Losing weight. Knowing your BMR.

I finally figured out how to lose weight. The secret is going to the Apps link and finding the BMR link. Fill that out and eat approx 100 calories less a week to lose 1 lb a week. I've even doing it for several months now and have lost 24 lbs. Good luck all.

You don't need to eat under bmr , you need to eat under tdee.

What's tdee? BMR is what your body burns naturally, doing absolutely nothing else. 1lb equals 3500 calories. So for 2 lbs a week you would wanna cut back 7000 a week/ 1000 a day. So your BMR plus what you burn off-1000 calories would be equal to 2 lbs a week.

But unless you're in a coma you are burning more than your BMR to start with....

You shouldn't eat below your BMR. This thread is incorrect.

BMR = Basal Metabolic Rate = the very lowest amount of calories your body needs just to survive, if you were bedridden or in a coma

TDEE - Total Daily Energy Expenditure = your BMR plus the calories you burn doing life...walking, chasing kids, exercising, etc.

There is nothing wrong with going below your BMR, especially if a person is sedentary and exercises little. Just got to watch that you dont go below the recommended daily minimums for calorie intake.

there is no way you should never take 500-1000 cals off your BMR, that's completely unnecessary to lose weight.

There's no problem with eating below BMR as long as you have enough excess fat to get your available energy up to your TDEE. Only so much fat can be freed up to burn per day so you do need to eat at least the minimum recommended calories.

BMR isn't a cutoff point for intake. It's just a part of the picture when you are looking at TDEE.

BMR is basically a meaningless number in terms of weight loss or biology, as long as you're not comatose. Its only real use is in calculating more meaningful numbers like TDEE.

Nope. If you read up, I quoted the person to whom I was responding.

I would however agree with the scientific fact that to lose two pounds a week, one needs to create a calorie deficit of a thousand calories less than their TDEE. Whether I support doing so would really depend on the individual circumstances of the person in question. For many it would be too aggressive a goal.

Yup. My full response, for context, was:

    I guess you disagree. *shrugs*
