My Fitness Pal is set up so you "diet" or lose weight by counting calories. You enter your statistics (age, height, weight) and activity level then pick a weight loss goal and MFP will tell you how many calories you should be eating every day to reach that goal. Keep track of everything you eat in MFP. Use a kitchen scale to weigh food so you're entering in the correct number of calories. Stay close to the calorie goal every day and you'll see success.
There are some great posts in these message boards that are stuck at the top of each group of threads. We call them "Stickies". You should read them and then ask questions if you still have some.0 -
Counting calories is definitely a good idea, but I like to do something that's a bit different than most people here on My Fitness Pal.
Knowing muscle takes more calories/energy to maintain, it'd make sense to build more muscle so your body is naturally burning more calories all day, everyday. With that in mind, I set a protein goal (I'm 150lbs. so I eat 150g of protein a day, women need a little less than that), I lift weights with progressive loads (get heavier and heavier) everyday, and I always eat less than my maintenance calories (my body needs about 1,700 calories a day so I eat 1,600).
With all that combined, I also do high intensity interval training on my leg days to keep the fat burning process high. I remember to stay hydrated and keep my head down to the grind because it's a longer journey. Many body builders (such as myself) often times have a 1-4 month prep period before they go compete. That means if you're overweight, you'll need at least 2 months to diet down to your goal weight/shape. It's tough, but you can do it.
I've always remembered (even before I started doing body building) that professional, natural body builders know the best methods to both gain muscle and lose fat since they do it on a yearly basis. Why not adapt their methods??0
