Question about Keto/low carbs and net carbs

Those who are on a ketogenic diet, do you subtract fiber and do net carbs or do you count all carbs? How many carbs are you eating. I am doing a modified more low carb currently weening down at 75 total right now will be dropping to 50 next week although not sure my body and lifestyle can successfully go below 50 total, although some of that is fiber. Just curious for others who are doing low carb/Keto if they do net or total and if the success they see is quick at first and slows down or is steady progress.

First week for me more serious on this diet (after one week getting my bearing) and I lost 1/2 inch around neck, 1 inch around waist and 2 inches around my hips so not too bad considering I had a few days of carbs in the 80s still so I am set to continue working on this diet and lowering the carbs.

I believe the choice is individual. The general idea is to subtract fiber (and sugar alcohols, if they do not effect you) but some people count total carbs as well.

Here is a script to install to keep track of net carb counts: https://github.com/Surye/mfp-keto-userscript

It works for the web version only.

I eat low carb, though not intentionally keto (probably am, but don't care either way). For me,
    net carbs = total carbs - fiber - (0.5 X sugar alcohols)
I try to stay below 30g net carbs each day, though sometimes go over.

Generally, going low carb is going to provide fast results early on, which will slow over time. The early losses are water weight. As your glycogen stores decrease, you lose water in the process.

When I've counted carbs in the past I've always used net carbs = total carbs - fiber - sugar alcohols.

There are only two sugar alcohols that should be completely subtracted from net carbs. Those are Erythritol and Arabitol (as both have almost non-existent FE and BG response). Keep in mind, there are some sugar alcohols (glycerol) that actually have a higher FE and BG response than sucrose does. Most of them fall into the half range though (1.6-2.4 vs. 4 for sucrose), and should be counted as a half net per unit.

Thanks for all the information. Never thought about sugar alcohols so I'll keep those in mind as well.

P.S. Super bummed mfp no longer allows us to control what percentage of our food we want to be carbs protein and fat. I've been doing it for years and this new update it's now only a premium option :(

I just started lowering my carbs last Monday, and I have no idea about the net carbs, but I would like to understand. I'm a vegetarian, and I'm trying to do 50-75 carbs daily. I have friends that have shed lots of weight by lowering their carbs down all the way to 20-40. I cannot imagine. lol Maybe if you love meat, but eggs, and tuna seem to be ruling my life this past week. Compared to what I was consuming, this is drastic. I had no idea how many carbs, were in so many things...goodbye ketchup, hello hot sauce. lol Getting ready to either order online, or hopefully find low carb bread, and products in store locally. I'm down 9 lbs. but I carry a lot of water...so not sure if that is a positive yet or not. I refuse to step on the scale til next Monday. Add me if you want a tag along. Maybe we can pick up different ideas from others. Good luck.
