Core Work First- Abs Later?

Is it true you should work on strengthening your core before beginning ab exercises? Also I have low back problems, can anyone point me towards a link for a good ab exercise that's gentler on the back?

    Second the rec for planks. won't wreck your back. Improvement comes quickly.

    Abs are part of your core. Besides the above mentioned exercises, bird dogs & dead bugs are good to do.

    Supermans and swimmers along with those planks, front and each side.

    those dang bird dogs...looked so easy, but I was wrecked after 5.
