Is it true you should work on strengthening your core before beginning ab exercises? Also I have low back problems, can anyone point me towards a link for a good ab exercise that's gentler on the back?

Abs are part of your core. Besides the above mentioned exercises, bird dogs & dead bugs are good to do.0

Supermans and swimmers along with those planks, front and each side.0
