So many times I've seen people post " I'm not losing weight" People your biggest tool in weight loss is knowledge! There are no quick fixes or if you do this to your diet you'll get skinny now. When you over estimate or under estimate your calories eaten or burned you are only hurting yourself! If you are serious about your goals get a scale, learn your portion size. Be informed of how many calories you are putting in. Do not be tricked into thinking something is healthier or less calories because you see certain buzz words on a menu. Look up the actual calorie count for that item.
The only person your hurting is you. You can put what ever you want in your diary but you are going to get the truth in the inches and movement on the scale.

But yes, I agree with this up to a point. However, I don't think these people are doing it on purpose. In the world outside of MFP, there are many myths and blatant lies. Basically, people don't know better.

You're right OP. I think the issue often is that people really don't realize how off they are.

    I completely agree OP.

The reason for people doing this is to 'protect themselves'. They believe that they're fat because something outside their control. They can't come to the realization that they did it to themselves. That realization would hurt too much. So, they cope by sticking their heads in the sand like an ostrich.

There are people who go to the latest fad diet, cheat with snacks, don't log the snacks, then cry 'why me?' (but love crying 'why me?' instead of owning up to the truth) and there are people who know it's not impossible, don't care about the past, will blame themselves if they have to, and will find out how to do it.

You don't get what you want - you get what you work for.

Along these lines, I heard an interview with five-time Olympic gold medalist swimmer Katie Ledecky in which she said she didn't consider herself particularly talented but that the key to her success was a lot of hard work and setting goals.

You're not going to get an argument from me. When my relatives and old friends ask how I'm able to do it now (if they ever do ask) I'll be able to truthfully explain that prior to January and mfp I did not know how to eat for a healthy weight.

While I would agree that using a food scale can be helpful, it is certainly not necessary to achieve one's goals, nor do I think it signifies how serious one is about reaching them. Weight loss is calories in/calories out, and "calories in" is not always the problem. There are people out there who eat a balanced diet and reasonable portion sizes, but life circumstances or medical issues have impacted the "calories out" portion. Sometimes just getting a handle on a medical issue or getting themselves back into a more active routine is the key to getting themselves back into a deficit. I believe you touched on this with your comment about estimating calorie burn, but I wanted to clarify for people who might not be comfortable with the idea of the food scale that they can still be successful by making other changes.
