Manual calories?

Threw my cheap pedometer away as it was totally rubbish!!
I'm in the process of walking locally and, until I find a decent HRM, am I ok to just estimate calories burnt at 4 per minute? Is this realistic? I'm 240 and in my third month of gym membership so clocked up a lot of miles on the treadmill so in a decent enough state. I don't log my calories on MFP but for my own benefit is 4 per minute ok!?

Runners World has a formula which will give you a reasonable estimate:
.57 x your body weight in pounds x distance in miles0 -
Thanks Brian although I'm only guessing the distance too right now without my HRM! Although I've noted that formula in my diary along with TDEE and a fair few others!!

Do you have a smartphone? With the built in GPS you can track distances with apps like mapmywalk . The GPS receivers in phones aren't quite as sensitive / accurate as something like a Garmin Forerunner but it would give you a reasonably accurate number.0 -
I don't unfortunately. I have an iPad which I really don't mind carrying around with me until I get a HRM and just signed up to map my run. Does that measure your distance as you walk/run?0

Is your iPad a wi-fi or 3G model? It' my understanding (feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, I don't own any apple products) that the wi-fi model is not GPS enabled.
Assuming yours is GPS enabled you'd still need an app like mapmyalk or similar.0 -
I have a suggestion, go to this website http://www.dailymile.com and check it out. If you know the area you plan on walking, you can log on ahead of time and map out your planned route. It will tell you how many miles it is. Go on out and walk that route, keeping track of the time you started and the time you finished. Then log back in, go to that route and put in the amount of time it took you to finish it, and how you feel. If you put in your height. weight and age- it'll also tell you how many calories you've burned. I've been using this program for a long time, even before I had a smart phone and I still use it now because I know it's reliable and really helpful.
Even on days where I just go out for a random walk, I remember the route and come home to log it.0
