Food experience. correlated to memory. love/hate.

Funny how some food is special to us while we don't like others because we associate them with a negative memory.

Does anyone else have specific food loves or avoidance because of something that may have happened in their past?

We were pretty poor when I was a kid and ate hamburger helper 8 days a week I didn't mind it as a child but I have never eaten it or enjoyed it in adulthood. My neighbors make it and when I smell it it smells awful to me. I just hate the stuff now I guess.

It goes without saying family and friends made thanksgiving a pleasant occasion in out family. a turkey dinner was one of my all time favorite meals any time of the year. If it was at a restaurant and I saw it on the menu - thats what a got. turkey, tatos with stuffing and gravy always makes me think of my awesome family times.

When I was about 16 I had blueberry pop tarts for breakfast, then had to sit in a car place while my tires were rotated. Someone in the car place had gone way overboard with the "new car scent" air freshener, and I felt extremely nauseous. When I got home I threw up for two solid hours.

Turned out I had a stomach bug, but now I can't eat any fruit pop tarts, or smell anything "new car" ish without feeling like I'm going to be sick.

When I was a kid my mom would make a HUGE bowl of taco salad a couple times a month for us to take boating, and I'd eat it normally while we were out, then when we got home my friend and I would pick out our favorite parts (for me the meat and lettuce, for her the slightly soggy chips and tomatoes). Every time I have taco salad I remember that and get happy.

Yes! Almost all fish. Especially trout and salmon. For a few years my dad forced everyone to have it for dinner three times a week. If we didn't eat it we couldn't have any side dishes. It was just cooked in a pan or grilled, but almost plain. With only lemon juice, salt, and pepper. It ended up tasting fishy a lot of the time and caused us kids to be sick quite often. So now I eat almost no fish, especially not trout or salmon.

Love: goetta. It's an odd concoction of ground meats and ground oats that is pan-fried like sausage patties. Would have it at my grandmother's when we were kids and take back a cooler full. Pesky regional cuisine.

Hate: Sunchips. Had one while coming down with something. Promptly vomited. Haven't been able to stomach the smell since.

Mixed: My (words that are banned by the moderators) male parental unit's socks smelled like parmesan cheese. I still don't know why. I can still eat the stuff, but occasionally it makes me shudder.
