Hello everyone! This upcoming Wednesday I'm having my thyroid removed and would like to know of any successful weight loss stories of people who've had the procedure done. I'm also 4 months pp and lost all of my pregnancy weight and some. I weighed 205 when I delivered my beautiful baby girl and I am currently 155 lbs. My goal is to weigh 145. I'm currently on synthyroid for hypothyroidism. My question is, when I get my thyroid removed, will it have any effect on my wight loss? T.I.A.

That will depend fully on your doctor and if they actually treat your hypothyroidism symptoms fully. There is a wide range of thoughts on what range is appropriate for hypo patients and if your doc follows just tsh or if they look at the full thyroid panel. If you struggle after being "fully treated" you could try to feet your doc to switch you to dessicated thyroid. It is more natural and many hypo patients prefer it. Good luck with your surgery!

My thyroid is normal as far as I know. But my roommate from college had a full thyroidectomy and she survived. I understand it can be quite difficult to find a knowledgeable and empathetic endo and to have said endo calibrate the meds just right, but this may be due to the area of the country she lives in.

She now appears to be losing weight by exercising and calorie counting. (I don't believe she lodt any before surgery.) She looks better than ever these days.

Total thyroidectomy here.... Lost 161lbs since December.... So don't let anyone try to tell you it can't be done.

Once you decide it's time.... And are on the right synthroid dose. You can make it happen

Total thyroidectomy back in May 2000. I was transitioning from the military to a cushy civilian job and pretty much stopped working out and put on ~70 lbs over 13 years. My wife was using MFP and I started logging my food about 2 years ago - lost the weight over about a year just by logging my intake and working out regularly.

It has as much impact as you allow it to have. There are many elite level athletes performing at their peak after a thyroidectomy. Jillian Michaels has Hashimoto's as well.
