I would argue that it does to an extent. Someone that surrounds them self with people that are unhealthy are more likely to partake in the unhealthy habits. Same could be said about the other way around.

However, environment is not the only thing that affects our decisions, but it sure is influential.

    Location, people... definitely.

Living in the city vs living in the suburb - having to walk everywhere vs driving everywhere. Being more or less stressed with long/short commutes. Your job.. how stressful? Do your coworkers order pizza and leave donuts in the break room all the time? Or are they just women eating salads at their desks? All that matters.

Then there's family and friends - for example most of my husband's family here loves playing board games and just hanging out... while my sister would rather go outside and be active. Then you can have family that loves eating out/high calorie food, or cook their own healthy meals... Spending a week with a very sedentary/eat out all the time family can be rough on your diet, or you can have a family that goes camping/hiking... And your friends, do they like going hiking, or do they like eating at all you can eat buffets and watching Netflix?

In the end it's ultimately up to us, but it can be harder for people if they are in the wrong environment.

More than environment, I think it's company you keep.

If you keep company with fit people, guess what? The group will want to do more active things, and you'll tend to do so as well. If you keep company with couch potatoes, same: You'll do more things like going out to eat, instead of going for a walk.

I believe the environment around us leads to unhealthy choices in regard to food (I.E. the westerner diet ) that is a global issue. It's about choices and I also believe who you surround yourself with Also helps in either direction . Seems crazy how more educated we are in nutrition yet fast food thrives everywhere. After we kill off smoking we need to take down fast food chains or at least keep pushing them to offer more clean options in food choices .

I'd be curious to know if it's still the same but I know where I live, it's not very health conscious. I have seen a few steps in the right direction though.

Kentucky really needs to try harder; there's no reason why they can't break at least 33%.

.... and Tennessee, you should be ashamed of yourselves. Look at your neighbors to the south. There is simply no excuse for your under performance.

This map actually gives me hope for the future.

I couldn't agree more! If you surround yourself with people who motivate and push you it makes all the difference!

Of course it does. I don't think any rational person would say it doesn't, but the trick to success is finding a way around obstacles to the best of your ability. If you're in a community that has a high obesity rate you can still seek out people who are focused on fitness. It's harder for sure, but the alternative is giving up.
