The back story:
So my friend teaches a body pump class. I have agreed to go, since she says it is sooo wonderful...yadi yadi yada. I am a heavy lifter. I have a small frame and I figure that if I need to be strong, its probably going to be to lift my groceries up the stairs. I do hike, so I might enjoy a bit more muscle endurance for lifting a heavy pack. That being said, I cannot follow along for the life of me. I do not know left from right. And I only have rhythm after a few rums. I prefer to pick up something heavy put it back down and repeat a few times and move on. Every class I have tried to do I pretty much run into people, get confused or some other form of embarrassment. That being said, I said I would go. Also, I do not, I repeat, never ever, work my chest. I paid way too much for the chesticles to be using them to move heavy weight. Say what you will about not having symmetry. It was my ten grand, I protect it.
Now for my question- Any one who has done this, am I going to have to work my chest? And is this going to be an hour of hell, and me running into people? Also is there any real benefit of me doing 100 reps with a weight lighter than my purse? What place does a class like this have in my regular routine? Did you enjoy this?
I fear change and new experiences.....Help!

I have less coordination and rhythm than you do, and I had no probvlem with BodyPump - no coordination required, and you stay in one place - the only time there is foot movement is to do lunges. I found it to be a lot of fun, loved the music and energy (I had to stop because squats/lunges were doing a number on my knees). There is a chest track, but you can do something else while it is on, or go out for a drink of water, whatever, no one will pay any attention to you. As for the amount of weight you use, it's totally up to you - some people load up with fairly heavy weights, and some people, particularly beginners, go light. I don't think I've ever seen anyone use a weight lighter than a purse.
The only way you're going to know if you like it or not is to try it out. Good luck :-)0 -
I take this class a couple times a week and love it. I am less then graceful and am very clumsy and I do just fine. All you need to do is follow the instructor. You decide the amount of weight that you want to load onto your bar I usually lift heavy. As someone else already said you won't have any issues running into anyone because you stand in the same spot during the entire class.0

I take it and I totally LOVE it!!!!
My first class I felt like a loser because all the other women were lifting more than me, so the next class I lifted heavy. ANDpulled my tricep. It was NOT FUN!
Now I just do what I need to do, I dont pay attention to everyone else. Everyone can do a pushup in the class, except for me. I just do what I can and know with time I will be able to be just like everyone else. I work my butt of and I totally can tell a difference in a short amount of time so it definately works!0 -
I used to go to Bodypump all the time in high school and college, and I am originally from the country that made Bodypump!
No, no coordination required. It's repetitive gym moves! I.e. squats, curls, etc. There's absolutely no running around (like there is in Bodycombat) or unknown moves to learn that you won't already know.
Also, you can sit out any tracks you want, it's a class but no one is going to make you do them! I always used to sit out the ab track because I have lower back issues and no one ever said a thing.
You also decide on your own weight for each track - you can swap out the weights and they give you time to do this.
Enjoy it! You'll probably get hooked!0 -
Love Body Pump! No coordination required. I had the same procedure you did and I've been doing the chest track...I wonder now if I should stop??? It's been a few years since I had it done. Does that matter?0

You'll be fine. I am sure you are no more uncoordinated than me and it's really easy in that regard - give it a go and let us all know what you think.
As for the chest track, usually it's bench press which sort of works chest but I found not nearly as much as the rare fly tracks they add so you may be able to do it even with a really light weight.
I love Pump0 -
Try it, I it!0

I'm a big fan of bodypump. It's the same every time, so if you don't get the moves right at first, you will eventually. I felt like the biggest clumsy dork ever the first time I went, but now I'm getting it.
I'm confused why you can't do chest exercises if you have breast implants (I assume that's what you're talking about?). I've never heard of that as being a problem before. If it is a problem, you can always just not do that part or do a different exercise during that part.0 -
The chesticles- It hurts to engage my chest muscles too much. I am pretty petite, and I got them done from an AA to DD, which is probably why. Plus I have friends who worked their chest too much and their boobies look a little square now. Not the look I want! That is under the muscle. I'm sure with the different types of exercise there is different out comes on the implants. Mine just feel like they are ripping out of my chest if I do too much work on them I do pushups, but only half way....
Thanks everyone for the advice. I'm going to try to enjoy this as much as I can... Hopefully I do become hooked and I can add it to my heavy lifting and cardio.0
