Back Darts on Men's Shirts

I'm pretty broad in the shoulders and chest (44") and smaller in the waist (34") and always have problems finding button up shirts that fit my upper body but end up with a ton of extra material in the waist area. A friend of mine recommended having my shirts tailored to add on back darts to fix the problem with the extra material. I looked them up because I had no idea what that was and saw that I liked the affect it has on the wear of the shirt but saw that the darts are noticeable. There are some people that think they make the men's shirt look like a ladies top. What do you think about back darts? Is this something I should look into?

Darts are recommended a lot because they're easier to remove but I'm not a big fan of them. It costs a little more but I prefer to have the sides taken in on any of my shirts that I need to have a slim or tapered fit.

I had to look it up - they were not where I thought they'd be! I think it's a sharp, flattering look, much better than baggy around the waist. Definitely visit a tailor (or dry cleaner) and have something done. They can pin it both ways to see which you prefer. The pictures I saw didn't look like women's tops to me. Now you've got me thinking about the time Michael Scott bought a women's suit. :D

As I was reading your post, before I got to this point I was thinking "It will probably look like a woman's shirt"

Edit: rather than darts, I'd just take it up a little on the seam.

Just get one shirt done and see if you like it.

Thanks everyone. I was reading that darts work better because you can always get them adjusted if you need to while side seams you can't. I was just wondering how noticeable they'd be.
