My son is 19 (20 in December) and newly into lifting. He got really into it when he joined the Air Force last year. Apparently there isn't much to do on base but his technical job and gym time. I would like to send him a magazine subscription or two for men's health and fitness publications. But a good publication - no bro-science rags. Any suggestions?

Send him a copy of Starting Strength and Practical Programming along with a tub of Optimum Nutrition Rocky Road.

IMO, most of the magazines have some broscience. I do subscribe to Men's Health, Men's Fitness and Muscle and Fitness. A fair amount of crap, but these will have some good points if you can pick them out from the BS.

    I subscribe to them through:

If you get on their mailing list and hit their specials you can often find these for less than $1 per issue (I would not be paying full subscription price). Also, going through them, you don't have the automatic renewal as a "curtsey" that many publishers are using now

This. I have a sub to M&F ($5/year). There are some good training and nutrition nuggets here and there. I treat a lot of it as entertainment.

I agree, mostly BS and marketing, a few good articles. I do get Men's Health. Don't pay news stand prices! I also agree on Starting Strength. That should be mandatory reading for weight lifting training.

We just started getting TRAIN. It's cool in that it has Train Men then flip it over and Train Women. That's about where the cool ends. This magazine comes from bodybuilding . com. They pimp stuff from their store all over the mag. Lots of bro-science and opinion. Funky layout that is confusing and looks thrown together. They couldn't afford proof readers as the grammar and spelling is crap. Very unprofessional.

Truth be had, much (ok, most) of my desire to send him the mags to so he was something to look forward to receive in the mail.

I'd consider something more toward his career path or other interest.

Meh, I find magazines are just books of ads with usually undocumented, silly articles like "if you train like this athlete you can be JUST LIKE THEM". At least that's my experience with ladies mags. I believe books would be better. I like New Rules of Lifting for the info, but I'm sure SS is awesome too, and there's likely many others that people will recommend.

I use the magazines to somewhat screen authors. Often if I read something by someone who seems like they know what they're talking about you can search for more in depth articles by them on their website or another source
