TV snacker with a touch of portion control problems

Hey folks, I'm recently getting back to tracking food spending a few hours a week at the gym or exercising outside, but boy that TV snack habit i have before bed just seems damn unstoppable. Would love to hear your success strategies.

TV snacks - a little bit of distraction helps me. I get a big glass of ice water and find something to do with my hands. Solitaire, surf the web, crochet, adult coloring book......anything. You just need to break the habit for a time. Pretty soon sitting in front of the TV does not = eating.
You could choose some very low calorie snacks and eat those mindlessly. But how long is munching on celery or cucumbers going to last? If you save some calories for then end of the day, you could have a 100 calorie bag of popcorn.....that might last awhile.2 -
THIS IS ME! It's never anything like apple slices either....more like lets make brownies....while those are cooking lets eat Nachos....fricken WORST! I came on here searching to see what other people do.1

What I have to do is a prepare a portion of whatever I'm having, and put the rest away. Then if I can't stop thinking about it, I will brush my teeth and get myself a glass of water.
Sometimes making myself a cup of mint tea will help if I'm not really hungry. Something about the mint flavor is like having a snack.
As @teabea said, it's all habit, you just have to change it. And I do save some calories almost every day for a night-time snack. Good luck!0 -
I've gotten into the habit of weighing out a serving of my snack, putting the box or bag back in the cabinet and then savoring what I have. Having the container right in front of me is no good, I will eat it all. So now, instead of a bag of Cheetos lasting one night, it'll be around for a while. You could also take up a hobby that ties up your hands while you watch tv.0

Pre-logging. After lunch, I'll log my dinner AND my tv snack. I call my tv snack "meal 4." So there is room for everything.0

I would set a time for my evening snack, then it would be served on a dish or in a bowl in the appropriate serving size - not on a napkin or from the bag/package . . . and I would have to then return the dish to the kitchen and wash it.
Not that I would pick a time really late but just sitting there waiting for that specific time sometimes made me feel really greedy, I would realize I really didn't want it, or fall asleep before the time came. If I felt hungry, sometimes that would mean I was and I figured I needed to eat something decent, not really snack stuff. Then there is always trying to just not have anything snack type in the house - this I do and I always hate myself for not buying anything other than carrots sticks or an apple . . .0 -
