Does anyone else hate working out at home?

Turns out my free college gym sucks, so I tried working out at home but there's just something about it I don't like. Maybe it's because I feel cramped or there's poor air flow or I just find dumbbell and body weight exercises boring. Memberships are kind of expensive, but I feel like I won't be as motivated to workout without one.

I don't like working out at home either. When I go into a gym, I am highly motivated. I workout better mentally because I can see people who pushes themselves. They inspire me and a great motivation overall. When I workout alone, I feel a bit down. No motivation whatsoever and not a lot of equipment to support my workout4

No way. But I have a rack, barbell, plates and blast metal.5

I have young kids...so yeah working out is a bit limited with them lol some things I can use them for wieght (abs, squats push ups ect) they love it! But its short lived so I usually go to the gym every day....which is funny because they come with me but different environment so they are better behaved
Your workout environment does matter! Sometimes the right workout music, the right set up and clothes make it easier to workout at home. Have you tried workouts like insanity? No I dont sell it lol its just one of my favorites hard core at home workouts0 -
I love working out at home. Since I am working very very long hours 7 days a week it's a blessing to have a place where I can workout at home and save time from transfering to and from the gym/yoga studio/ dance class or whatever you want to do. When I have more free time I occassionally go to a gym or dance class, mostly to stir my routine up and socialize a bit.1

I love working out at home. I've built a gym over the past decade - I have a treadmill, an elliptical, a recumbent seat bike, a Universal Weight station and free weights. I can workout any time I want - I don't have to wait for anyone, it's my gym - and it rocks!5

I have all the equipment I need at home, but for some reason I feel like I just push myself harder at the gym. At home, I'm too close to my couch... and my kitchen. lol3

I love working out at home but a big part of that is having the equipment I need in order to do what I want. If I didn't have the budget for that I'd have to suck it up and either work out at a gym or find a different way of training. I go to a gym from time to time but for the most part I like being at home by myself. As I get older, noises/sounds bother me more (some more than others--the exhaust fan over the stove puts me on edge) and multiple sounds at once make me very tense. Home workouts ftw here.1

I agree I HATE working out at home. Too many kids, too many distractions. I need my ME time at the gym.3

I work out at home and have a few basic tools of trade for a varied program and it works for me. Blasting music helps me and I can Centre my focus. A drive or journey to get to the gym would be a drainer for me and I don't like to wait for equipment to free up. Maybe a training partner ?0

yeah i hate working out at home because of the weird guy who hangs around and lifts weights in my basement.3

Even though I have a workout machine at home that's better than most I've dealt with, it's NOT the same as moving around the dead weight of barbells and dumbells. So yeah, I don't like working out at home much.

I love working out at home! But I've got plenty of space and am not cramped in the "home gym" like it sounds you are.
Bottom line - your best work out sessions are the ones you enjoy and are likely to stick with long term. So if that means a gym for you now - go to the gym and get the work out done!

It might be a bit boring at home to do just bodyweight exercises, but you can try to make it more fun? Find something you like!
I found the site darebee.com with lots of workout programs that have you do a different set of exercises every day, so you don't get bored doing the same thing over and over. Right now I'm working on the Fighter's Codex with my heavy bag, and I'm loving it! No need for an expensive membership or finding the motivation to get out the door to actually go to the gym (because that was the hard part for me), I just have to go upstairs!1 -
I do it, but I don't like it. My house isn't conducive to it. Open floor plan, old carpet, poor airflow, people coming in and out... But it beats not working out at all, I guess. So far, I just try to make it work.1

I found that if I tried working out at home, I ended up sitting on the couch watching TV. I don't have room for much anyway, so I joined the gym.4

This. The only work outs at home I do is running around my neighborhood while my son keeps himself entertained. And I check in every mile (usually only run 3-4 miles). During the week I go to the gym in the mornings before work. I'm way more motivated, mainly because I have less time so I am focused on getting the most out of it.1 -
I love working out at home! I don't have to share equipment, work in with someone else, deal with sweaty people (other than myself and DH), or rude people. But I have a dedicated space and all the equipment I'll ever need and that makes a big difference.1

I love working out at home. It's nice to be able to throw a dvd into the blu-ray and get the workout done. I also have a pole at home, so since I can only get to a pole class 1x a week, it's nice to be able to work on and perfect the moves before the next class.
I do go to pole, aerial, and spin classes, so it's a nice mix between getting some socialization and being able to have some alone time. The only issue is my cat gets in the way sometimes, but other than that working out at home is awesome. I don't have to wait in line for the bathroom, I can hop right in the shower (so less time being a sweaty mess), and I can play the music that I want to listen to and not worry about headphones.3 -

Another vote for love. I have a dedicated space. No distractions allowed during workouts. I have exactly what I need and nothing I don't. I never have to wait for equipment or to work in. No one tries to engage me in conversation. No unsolicited advice. No bros. I can listen to the music I love. There's no nasty sweat stains on the equipment (except my own) . No closings, no hours, no fees.
I haven't belonged to a gym since 2010, and I can't imagine ever going back!2 -

I despise working out at home. I have a set of dumbbells, along with everything I need for my ab circuit, which means arm, ab and "power" leg day could all be easily done at home, but I always opt for the gym over a home session. I love dumbbells (really not a fan of body weight exercises, surpassed that and now it feels like nothing unfortunately, because that was the easy/cheap option), but something about being in the gym just sets me up mentally for a killer work out. I don't know if it's the pressure that being around others puts on me to absolutely crush it, but I never work out quite as hard when I'm at home vs. the gym.2 -
I hate it as well. I've tried over and over and it sucks.
The gym is a necessity for me.3 -
You don't have to train inside. Does your college have a stadium? Run the track and bleachers. Fill a wagon with battle ropes, Kettlebells/dumbbells, medicine ball... and circuit train on the field. Also you might find tractor tires and other football training apparatus on another field. And then there are team sports like tennis and soccer.
I like training in my home as well as anyplace within walking distance.1 -
I wouldn't enjoy working out at home if I didn't have a designated area to do it in. I bought a power rack and barbells, bench and weights and took over an extra room to create my workout space. When I'm in there I'm focused. I'm actually consistent with workouts now and I wasn't when I had to drive to my gym.2

strangely enough, i'm an introvert but i don't think i'd like to work out where i live. i like the sense of project and mission i get when i'm leaving home and there's only one place that i'm heading for.
too many potential distractions at home. at the gym, there's nothing to do but lift weights, and i really like how i can sink into a focus with it. i have the same thing about not working from home - i like my home to be defended against my own capacity to get completely absorbed in something.1 -
I have 1 room that is perfect to build a home gym, if I could afford it. No windows(no one can see me) nice and cool in the basement, and it already has a treadmill
However, I am currently doing workouts in my living room upstairs. It's cramped and my kids usually get bumped because that's their favorite place to play, but I don't have a tv downstairs to follow. But I love it when they try to workout with mommy. They're my little cheerleaders.0 -

Yeah, my workout room is my living room. I live alone so it isn't a problem. My pole is set up right smack dab in the middle of my living room, and no one is around to get annoyed by it but my cat, lol, and she tries to get on it from time to time.
If I need to do a dvd, there's a large enough space in my bedroom that I can do that in there without bumping into anything. I purposely set my bedroom up like that when I first moved in b/c I knew I would want to do workouts in there.
The only issue I run into is when I'm stretching on the ground and my cat tries to climb all over and around me. She'll stick her face right in my face, it's more funny than annoying.
I'd love it if I had higher ceilings so my pole could be taller and I could possible install silks or a trapeze bar or a hoop for lyra, but that's a thought for my dream house.1 -
I've found working out from home needs me to stick to HIIT. Since inner motivation can be quite a challenge, whenever am down I come to MFP for the spike. Still, working with others has incredible ulterior positive effects.0
