Lower back issues

I have had back issues off and on since I was about 9 years old. I found out I have a mild curve in my spine that causes issues as well as an injury from when I fell off some playground equipment and landed on my back. Sometimes it flares up mildly, but lately, I've had two instances of being almost immobile for a day.
I walk, not yet able to run. I do stretches and also want to do more strength training. Does anyone know of some good exercises that help strengthen the back? I know I need to strengthen my core as well. I just want to find a way to get my workouts without hurting myself again.
Thanks!

You might like to try Pilates, it really focuses on core strength. I have a couple of the Caribbean Workout dvds with Shelly McDonald. They are available on Amazon and are great for beginners. She has all kinds of workouts, but the Pilates really helps with the core, while being fairly easy on the back. Another idea is to use a big exercise ball for core strength, as it supports the back. I have lower back issues, as well as a curve in my lower spine, and these exercises really helped.0

It may be best to seek the guidance if a good physio to ensure you don't injure yourself.
I would recommend body-weight exercises in the first instance to start conditioning your core. Planks, push ups etc are a good starting point.
If/when you are ready to move on, squats and deadlifts are great for the core. You would need to start very light and add weight slowly, under the supervision of an experienced physio or trainer.0 -
DancingMoosie, thank you for the suggestion of Pilates. I used to do Pilates a lot. I need to get the dvd's out again.
And regarding the guidance of a physio or trainer, I agree. I know my regular doctor recommended Yoga and gave me some stretches to do and said No Running. The No Running part broke my heart when I learned that a couple years back since I was running 35 miles a week. But I see how Yoga can be beneficial since it really helps keep a person flexible, therefore reducing the risk of injury.
Thank you for the suggestions.0
