Just finished this article and it was really intriguing. The two biggest takeaways for me were that the number one difference was that the most successful ate 29% more fiber than others, 13% vs 10% (still came no where near the suggested amount). The second thing that stood out was they ate less eggs and meat but more cereal than others, which is something I certainly did not expect. I have given up on cereal and even beans because they really don;t seem to provide enough good stuff to counter their massive calorie count. Friends are going on Atkins, and noticing how hard it is to get enough protein without fat I have been contemplating doing the same. I would really like to know what cereals these people eat and how they get their protein. I did find Kashi go Lean High Fiber High Protein cereal has 12 g of fiber and 13 g of protein so I will definitely look for that. It only got a 3-star review but the review was actually pretty good.

I haven't read the article, but if that really is the takeaway, I say thank you for the warning, I will not be looking for it - that is bad science. Extracting arbitrary markers from a large, undefined, uncontrolled group is not going to predict what will be helpful for any given individual.
If you eat low carb, you have to eat more fat. More protein than you can utilize is not going to do you any good. Cutting out food groups for no good reason, and focusing on single foods or nutrients, will reduce variety, which may be the most important factor in getting in good nutrition. Obsessing over eating takes away much of the pleasure. We need the pleasure that can be derived from eating.5
