There is to be a new Anytime Fitness 24hr gym opening local to me soon. Has anyone any experience of these gyms? Do they have a good range of free weights, especially in the UK?

It seems to differ between locations, but 24 hour gyms (in my experience in Australia) tend to have less free weights, I think it might be to do with the liability insurance in an unattended gym. But seeing as they are opening soon, they will undoubtedly do free 3 or 5 day passes, so you can check it out.

I think it's going to vary. The ones around here have dumbbells but no barbells. They don't want the liability of someone being trapped under one at 3 AM when the gym isn't staffed.

I have a membership there, with quite a few locations in my area, and all the ones I've been have everything. I really like them!

The one I go to has everything and even encourages barbell training by posting lift records by age group.

The Anytime I go to has four squat racks (two with landmine attachments), tons (literally!) of olympic weights, safety bars, thick bars, EZ curl bars, dumbbells from 5-150 lbs., fixed weight barbells, kettlebells, several high/low pulley stations, etc. - along with the usual machines, TRX harnesses, battle ropes and other gadgets. As far as free weight equipment goes, about the only thing they're really missing is a powerlifting platform and bumper plates.

Take a tour of it when it opens - they should be happy to show you around the gym and let you see whether or not they have the equipment that matches your needs.

I have an Anytime Fitness membership and have dropped into many of them. They are a franchise, so the types of equipment differ from club to club. Most are pretty good though.

I have been a member at Anytime Fitness for several years, my home gym has everything, barbells, dumbbells, cable system. I have been to 6or 8 other locations and I have never been to one without barbells and dumbbells.

The main perk with AF is that you have access to all of their clubs.

I used to rotate between 3-5 of their clubs when I had a membership. It was fantastic.

If you're stuck with one club, make sure they have everything you need and you can get in a good workout at the time slot you go in. There's not that much real estate in their clubs from my experience.
  • As a powerlifter, it's one of the better all-purpose globo gyms I train at and while traveling. As stated above, each is little different depending on owner or ownership group. The three in closest in proximity to me are tops. I have at least nine to choose from within a 15 mile radius. However, if the one you plan to primarily train at sucks butt, look elsewhere.

Use to belong to a small Anytime Fitness location. No other location close by. Very few free weights. Mostly machines. Only benecits were that it was cheap and you could use the facility anytime day or night.

It was tbe last gym that I joined. Gave up gyms all together after I built my own gym w/all the equipment I need at my house, where I can now work out anytime day or night, in the privacy of my own home.

I agree that there is generally not a lot of real estate, but the one I belong to has a ton. It originally had very little then moved to a larger location and didn't add new equipment, now we have a ton of space....down and back walking lunges are a lot more work than they used to be.

as the next nearest anytime fitness gym is 22 miles a way I think I'd only be using this one. I shall wait til it opens and have a look around
