Intermittent Ankle Pain--Ideas?

I was treadmill running for months with no injuries. Then I began Insanity and started having trouble with my left ankle. I would have shooting pain that I would rate 7/10 during and sometimes after working out. I never worked through the pain for fear that I would do more damage. Finally, I decided not to finish the program since it seemed to be so hard on my ankle. In order to rest my ankle, I took two weeks off from high impact workouts and just started back with lifting and HIIT a week ago.
My ankle is still tweaked, but it happens at such weird times that I don't know what's up. Here's a great example: This weekend, I'm walking and suddenly I have shooting pain in my ankle so bad that my boyfriend has to help me hobble to a bench to sit down. I try to stretch it out and put weight on it, but it still hurts. The stretching doesn't hurt it, just the weight. So I just chill there for a few minutes. Then I go to put weight on it and it's fine. Like nothing ever happened. An hour later, I'm playing sand volleyball--jumping, running, diving--the whole bit. No pain. This has happened over and over. And not just since I started working out again.
I know I should probably see the doc...but that will be incredibly expensive for me. I'm just hoping I can get some tried and true ideas for an at home fix. Anybody have this happen to them before? What was the deal? How did you fix it?
