Lifting heavy with a bad wrist? How to start.

All you Strong woman are completely hot. I have no fear of bulk. I've always loved the toned look.

But every time I start a program lately, my right wrist starts to get a really big cyst in it (they call um "Bible Bumps" cause people used to whack them with a large book). I've heard mixed reviews about getting them drained or removed with surgery, so I guess I'm gonna attempt to "play through the pain."

Right now my husband and I have started DDP Yoga...I wanna start lifting on the alternate days--but all I've got in the basement are hand weights up to 20s. There's not a lot of money for new equipment at the moment. Where do I begin?! What exercising can I start with those?

I'll be going to college in the fall, so I'll have access to the gym equipment at the college then--but I want to get started now. Or maybe people can recommend some books or programs or at least wrist advice. I'm floundering a little on where to start with it.

I think a good place to start is talking to a doctor.

After gaining his/her blessing, I'd say look into VersaGrips. I love them for assisting my grip, but they probably will also help with your problem.

My husband gets them. They're not a big deal, really.

Use wrist wraps. You can get them at a sporting goods store. If you want, you can also tape your wrists with sports tape. That's available at most drug stores and even the grocer store in the first aid section.

First I'd get the doc a visit to clear you for using the wrist. And I down have that problem but use the advice given above once you get the go-ahead.

As for what to do with 20s...Weighted lunges, DB squats, chest press, side and lateral raises, Arnold/military press, kickbacks, hammer and regular DB curls, flys and pullovers, rows....essentially anything you can do with a barbell can be done with a DB though some require variations to get the same result.

You'll get through the 20s relatively quickly but once you get access to the campus gym things will be better. You could also do bodyweight exercises such as go to a park, find a monkeybar and do pull-ups/chin-ups, do some regular or as some call it "man" push-ups, etc

Doing a little research, it bumps are fluid leaking, now I have no idea if wraps would help or not.

Though addressing your other question, 20lbs may not seem like a lot but for a month and a half starting out they can work. My thought is use what you have, just practice good form, and do everything slowly, to really feel the burn. And maybe start off high rep, which will still tone you up. Now you may not get bulky, but once you get on campus you can go heavier, and at which point you should have good form down pat. I mean, I see numerous people throw around big weight in the gym, but wonder where the size growth is, and it is mainly because they are doing the exercises wrong and cheating themselves.

Now if you are looking for good routines and exercises I would recommend www.bodybuilding.com they have quite a bit of free material, and demo videos.
