Trying to get started...

I'm 32 y/o, 5' 5.5" around 147 lbs, the last time I checked. My goal is to lose about 15-20 lbs and trying to figure out how best to do it. I've never had luck with gyms, I've tried treadmills (I loathe running), ellipticals, and even the 30 minute circuit training at Planet Fitness, never lost a pound. I've tried pilates, useless. Yoga I just get dizzy and frustrated. The only time I lost weight was when I was belly dancing and became an instructor, so between teaching classes, rehearsing for shows, I got close to my goal weight and had fun doing it. However, due to personal differences with the studio management I left. Though it left me a little burnt out on belly dancing. Now I'm looking to find a work out that is active like dancing, kickboxing, or I tried Krav Maga which I liked, but my wrist injury put the kibosh on that. I've even tried Zumba, but couldn't stand it. When I tried it, there was as lot of hip-hop type of moves which my body doesn't do well, I just don't move that way. I'm looking at a few of the DVD workout sets like Metamorphosis or Brazil Body Now. I tried P90X for 4 or 5 weeks and hated it. I saw absolutely no results AND I was miserable doing it. I know it's a 90 day program, but since the weight doesn't magically dissappear on day 90, I should have seen some sort of progress, but again, not 1 pound lost even doing the diet portion of it.
So here I start the journey and hope my husband understands why I don't want to have a stock of cupcakes in the house at all times. (He's Army Nat Guard and does PT 4-5 times per week so I don't think he gets it).

Hi BookDeity,
welcome on MFP! If you are into DVD workouts, I highly suggest starting with 30 day shred from Jillian Michaels. You are bound to see results in a month. I have!! and I swear by JM and her DVDs.
Check out some of the forums, you will find a lot of before and after result pics.
And you might not lose weight while doing strength training! You know what they say about muscles and fat not weighing the same and all that. So, did you take measurements? Do your clothes fit better?
If not... the ultimate question, how was your diet? Were you over eating to 'compensate' for the workout? You still need to eat at a deficit!
Feel free to add me for some help and motivation!0 -
I enjoy the Cathe videos, she has a great selection
Also cycling is a favorite for me!0 -
Deedzzz,
I'm not a fan of Jillian Michael's style. I really just want a fun workout, otherwise I'm not going to stick with it.
When I was working out, there were no differences in how things fit or how I looked either.
As far as diet, I'm not a on a strict calorie count diet. I portion control and cook healthy. But at this point, I know I just need to find something to get me moving and I know it'll come off.0 -
I am so jealous, I'd love to be able to belly dance (if I ever get down to a size that I could belly dance that is). It's always looked fascinating and beautiful to me.0
