Carb Counting

So I just talked to my dietitian and she wants me eating 16 servings of Carbs a day. Vegetables are free and I can eat these servings throughout the day. IS this a lot of carbs to be eating in a day and will i still loose? I see this dietitian because i wanted to get insight on getting healthy. Thanks

I have no idea what 16 servings of carbs per day is. If vegetables are free...and I only eat a little added sugar and no bread...I don't know. How many GRAMS does she want you to eat?

I have no idea what 16 servings mean. Grams might make more sense, although 16 grams is impossibly low. Vegetables have carbs as well, but there are low carbs veggies like leafy greens, cabbage, broccoli, and high carb vegetables like potatoes, sweet potatoes, taro, yuca, yams, etc. You might want to get some clarification from your dietician.

Its based on the diabetic exchange diet. So total 240 grams of carbs.

If the vegetables are "free" and not part of that carb count? Yeah, I'd say that was kinda high. If the vegetables are part of the 240? It's more than I eat, but not more than many folks here.

What does a 40/30/30 split here on MFP give you?
  • I know they say vegetables are a free food but I just bring myself to agree. However why does this dietitian want you to have so many servings of carbs? I so t because you have diabetes or are pre-diabetic? I would think in that case you want to have less carbs. I could be wrong so please correct me if I am.

Is that food pyramid style of servings? Wow. That's a lot. 240g of carbs plus veggies? That's a higher carb diet. It doesn't seem helpful if lowering your blood glucose is the goal.

Maybe 240g of carbs plus veggies for a week?

That sounds about right. When I had gestational diabetes they had me eating 18x15g net carbs a day (including fruit & veg).

But I don't particularly agree with it now...

If your diabetic that seems like a lot of carbs. That competes with me and i am a fair lean and active male. If anything i would work to lower carbs and increase fats with moderate protein and high fiber.

Just out of curiosity, do you see her because you were directed to do so by a doctor or because you feel that she may be able to help you get on track?

When you tell MFP you want to lose weight it gives you a breakdown of macros. The general starting point is 40%carbs...
I did 30% but many folks do 40%. I'd be curious what that tells you compared to what your person tells you, all in the context of your NEEDS.

OP, how many calories are you eating a day to lose weight? How many pounds did you set MFP to lose per week?

If you consume around 2000 calories per day to lose weight, this 240 carbs sounds about right.. But the added veggies being free sounds strange, but this is for added veggies only right?

So if you are eating 2000 or more calories to lose weight it might NOT be that far off. I understand that you went for evaluation and knowledge on getting healthier, but anytime anyone recommends a specific method based on a particular "Diet" (i.e. Carb Exchange Diet) when you do not have health related issues to needing to be on that specific diet, always ask questions and followup..

Not saying this dietician is wrong, but you are right for asking the question here..

That is...a lot of carbs. Why are you seeing this dietician?
