How to stay on track at events

Im finding it difficult to stay on track when at a family function, party or anything like that. I've tried pre planning and that has helped a couple times- I find when I get in company I just want to eat whatever and ignore physical symptoms of full ness... Any tips or feedback ? Thanks!

Put off the first mouthful for as long as possible at parties. I feel the same way as you when I get in company, but if I don't have any nibbles or snacks that are being passed around or lying on a table available, then I do better. Basically you're putting off waking up the appetite monster inside :p After the first mouthful though, I find myself starting to graze.

Normally I'd say "Live it up!" But right now I have short-term goals that involve a cash prize, so...

I went to bingo Saturday and Sunday and it's tough to avoid all those "fat bomb" meal items, especially when your admission included $20 in free food. So, Saturday I stuck with a slice of pizza. Sunday I had a tuna melt and 80 cal bag of Utz potato chips. Both days I picked on my ex boyfriend's fries because let's face it, he owes me.

Don't let yourself get hungry, but do work in a treat or two along with some reasonable main food items. That's pretty much all I got.

I really just think moderation. one function doesn't kill everything unless you let it. i had a horrible day yesterday with two events on the same day, but regardless its not like i ate 3500 or more calories over my maintenance so ya...maybe i put on a 1/4 pound, but its not the end of the world.

you just have to do the best you can at the event, enjoy it!!...then move on. don't sweat it.

I think eating around people who are eating is contagious.. you see them eating and you want to eat. I get that totally.

You can bank calories during the week (eat less and save calories through the week) so you can indulge, work out before the event, or just forgo the deficit for the day and eat at your maintenance calories with or without banking calories I mentioned. You can fill up or graze slowly through the event, and as someone mentioned delay the first mouthful.. take a look at the "spread" and carefully determine what you want to eat, instead of biting everything for a taste and then deciding.. this will save a lot of calories.

You HAVE to enjoy life, life is social and almost always involves eating, this is something that you will figure the best method to handling this. :)

I've commonly just saved ~1000 calories (for my nutrition it's fine...you may need to reserve a different amount) for occasions like that. When I get there, I enjoy myself but not lose control. Also, do a hard/intense workout that day to really make sure you get in some good work.

we have to keep in mind, if the only goal is not gaining weight from the event, you have to eat quite a few calories over maintenance...3500 = a pound. most people don't do that however if your drinking too, it can add up. bottom line...an event won't kill your goals. weight gain doesn't happen at one event...its the mindless eating day after day after day. just don't let it derail you and you'll be fine.

I tend to bank calories when I anticipate an event where my will power will be tested, just in case I give in. Yesterday I went out for brunch, and then was going out to another event in the evening - I was able to get in an hour of swimming to afford the hard cider I knew I was going to have!
