New to lifting, where do I start?

I am ready to take the big leap into lifiting weights. I have no idea where to start other than getting brave and leaving the cardio section and venturing over to the side of the gym where all the really fit people hang out. I am very insecure when it comes to lifting weights with all those fitness gods and goddesses. I am looking for some advice on what excercises I should be doing in order not to hurt myself. Any advice is welcome as I would love to pick your brains!

Speak to a trainer at the gym to get a routine. If you don't want to do that, Stronglifts 5x5 is a good place to start.

find a beginner's full body programme is a good start.

this thread is good for ideas which lifting program is the best for you

Watch countless videos on getting the right form and don't be afraid to ask a trainer to show you (although pick the trainer wisely). Don't try and make up your own programme as a beginner, it's just not worth it.

oh, and take recovery days. You'll need them.

Get on an established progressive weightlifting program. As mentioned, stronglifts 5x5 is a good place to start. There is also starting strength and a few other beginner programs. SL 5x5 is what I started with a little over 2 years ago now. It's going to give you a good base of strength and knowledge for weightlifting into the future. It's easier to learn as it's only 5 movements. Either get a trainer to help you with form for the first few times, or study youtube or other videos for how to do the movements. It's also helpful to video yourself so you can see what you look like compared to those form videos.

You might feel awkward the first month or so (I know I did), but as you continue to add weight, you'll become more confident and at least for me I didn't feel so out of place. Everyone starts somewhere though and most people aren't paying attention to anyone but themselves. Just remember you're competing against yourself and not anyone else over there lifting.
