Tracking activity on iPhone

Hey there, I wondered if I could get some opinions on tracking activity. After some trial and error, I settled on inputing my calorie goal as "base" calories of 1300, assuming I was sitting around all day, and then using my iPhone to track steps and make an adjustment automatically on MFP. If I go running or engage in a heavier walking routine, like steep terrain for extended periods, I use MapMyFitness to track it and compare the calories against the adjustment from the iPhone count. I don't upload MMF data to MFP because it would double count. I found that MFP and MMF give similar counts, but they are probably using the same algorithm. For non-walking exercise I direct input.
Does this seem like a good way to do it? I found if I tried to adjust my goal according to expected activity I severely over or underestimated how much I needed to eat. With this system, I have been eating around 1400 - 1500 calories depending on activity level and have not been starving but still feel a little hungry and I am losing a pound every three or so days when I stay about 100 cal below the goal + adjustment.
Are there more accurate ways of doing this? How do you track daily activity, if you track it at all?

I use Runtasitc to track my cardio and import directly into MFP. I don't bother logging weight lifting burn because nothing I've found can track it accurately.
Realistically, look at what it adds, see if the scale matches your expectations, and adjust accordingly.0
