Snack addict help!

Just joined MFP yesterday.

41yo UK male. Always been unhappy with weight, but never enough to do anything about it!

Diagnosed with NAFLD last week and told by doctor to lose weight, so here I am!

Desk based job, and my normal daily routine is sitting snacking all day - biscuits, crisps, sweets.

How do I break this habit??!

Looking to lose around 50 pounds, and would welcome some MFP friends for motivation and accountability!

  • Perhaps start with changing what you snack on, go for carrots, snap peas, celery, etc.. then work on changing the behavior. If you normally grab a snack at 10 am, then tell yourself you have to wait till 11. At 11, see if you can make it until noon or lunch.

Rather than grab a snack, drink some water or a diet drink or go take a little walk around the office.

I also had a habit of snacking while working, so it took a little to break, but it can be done. Best of success to you!

I agree with above poster, change what you eat first, then change how often. your body will get used to having what it needs for energy and you can slack off on eating so much.
My go-to snacks at work are apples with peanut butter (carefully measured), oranges, carrots and hummus, celery and pb or hummus, any small leftover portions (beans, chicken, soft taco, you get the idea).

I'm a snacker too. So I include 2 snacks in my day. Make sure your daily calories aren't so low that you can make room for something.

Like @sparklyglitterbomb said, your snacks will need to change somewhat. Crisps - salty, crunchy. Rice cakes or air popped popcorn will fit. Sweets - frozen grapes are good, single serve chocolates (Ghiradelli here).

Change what is around you, first of all. If crisps and sweets are your achilles heel, then get rid of 'em! Don't even buy them. Make sure you have lots of water around, diet sodas to sip on, and change what you've got to eat. Keep a bag of baby carrots in the fridge, for instance, or keep around a snack you don't like. That's the ultimate test-- if you're truly hungry, and not just bored, you'll eat something you don't like the taste of!

Dude I eat constantly, I have just replaced my snacks with nuts and fruit. Especially pine nuts. They are pricey, but very filling (they actually have a very unique fatty acid that suppresses hunger, which helps to curb the habit).
