Why do the mods lock threads so easily?

It seems like lately, if a thread topic causes a great amount of debate, it will get shut down. I've seen threads get locked that contained almost no personal attacks, but instead had, for the most part, civil back and forth debates that actually had a lot of good information on both sides. What's the deal?
