They always make my back hurt like hell the day after, but so worth it. Since I incorporated them, my hamstrings and glutes have popped significantly (although it could be the hip thrusts too, incorporated them around the same time). It's all about the form. Make sure you keep your legs stiff, strong and clench your muscles. Go slow, don't just pop the bar up and down quickly.3

You've heard correct. Deadlifts are fantastico. But please, for the love of glutes, be mindful of form.5

It is the most overall, beneficial lift there is in my opinion. You won't be sorry.4

I had this as I started lifting heavier. I tried a lifting belt for the first time last week, deadlifted 300 lbs, and no sore back! I'm definitely purchasing my own lifting belt as I continue on.0 -

what weight did you start with?0 -
I'm so psyched now0

Think about it...it's a very functional lift. And yes, it works the entire body...just mind your form...bad form is where people end up with hurt backs.
If I was told that I could only do one lift, dead lifts would be on the short list...they wouldn't actually win, but probably number two...I love cleans.1 -

It's a good lift. But i would follow a professionally designed program, because self-designed routines are often flawed. Bonus points for having your form checked by a good trainer. At the very least, video your form.2 -

Not puny...I recently started reading up on this stuff and kettleball swinging and I have fell in love. I feel like I will be able to do something significant I never thought possible. It is exciting! I picked up your enthusiasm! I ordered a book and have been surfing bodybuilding.com.2 -

Are you counting the bar weight? If not you were lifting more than you think.

Sadly that was including the bar lol but .. Onward & upward I work out at home in our little gym with a barbell, it's max is 20K and was too heavy for me to lift onto my shoulders for squats (still managed with help) so decided to try deadlifts, ..seems a great solution1

Same!1 -
the empty bar is where you should start. work your form in with the empty bar before you go higher.
I recently started stronglifts 5x5 and I knocked my starting weight down to 225 and concentrated on my form Sticking with the plan I'm lifting 300lbs now and it is far easier with good form than it would be if I just continued trying to rip the bar up off the floor. In a few weeks I'm hoping to pr over 400lbs which was my sticking point pre form adjustment.1 -
Yes, form is definitely important. Every time I see a rounded back in the gym doing deadlifts, a piece of me cries inside.3

Its not a race.
Enjoy your progress.7 -
Deadlift is one of the most effective compound exercises you can do in weight training. Forget about how heavy you can go right now. Its all about correct form first. Perfect your form and gradually increase weight as you are able. I saw your post about squatting which is another awesome compound exercise. Front squats may be easier for you to start with instead. You can find videos o you tube, but best to have someone knowledgeable help you with form. I'm guessing you are using a short bar as a long bar weighs 45 lbs without any plates on it. Try both front and back squat without any weight on the bar first.2

No. Nooooo. Noooooo... A long way to go to what? You're doing them and it's a personal best. Savor that victory and compare you to you. The fact you're doing them is a thing of beauty.6 -

Thanks for all your supportive comments guys the FP community is amazing for motivation & praise
Love you all X3 -
FWIW, the deadlift is a great powerlift that works mostly the lower body (and the rest of the body to some degree as well) but you should NOT experience any back pain or soreness doing one.
If you do, there's something wrong with your form (an indictation that you're initiating the lift w/your back and not your hips), which could lead to a serious injury when you start to lift heavy.2
