Sushi

Why is sushi so high in calories, is the rice and salt? What sushi can I eat that isn't going to break the calorie bank. I usually allow about 300 calories for lunch, so today's Salmon Nigri is blowing that out of the water

Yeah it's the rice and the seasoning that they put in it - it has sugar in it I believe?

yeah, in the future, i would try and plan ahead and save calories for it. Sushi is no fun when you have to limit it!

And nigiri is a good option, you can eat half the rice like you were saying. If anyone else is thinking about sushi, definitely avoid the rolls (especially those with mayo, deep fried, etc.) if you want to lower calories.

Edit: sushi rice is made with salt, sugar, and rice wine vinegar.

It depends on what you're getting...if you're getting all kinds of exotic rolls it's going to be a calorie bomb...for one whole roll, one cup of rice is typically used...then you have the various sauces which are often mayo based and/or have quite a bit of sugar.

Personally, I keep it simple and I'm really not into all of the rolls...give me sashimi everyday and I'm a happy man...if I want a little rice I'll have a few nigiri...a piece of tuna sashimi is going to come in around 35 calories...make it nigiri and you're looking at 60 calories or so...

I can easily have a very satisfying and filling sushi meal for 500 calories (or less)...but they can easily exceed 1,000 calories if you're getting rolls or loading up on nigiri.

I had no idea, until I asked the lady to weigh it and then added it once I got to work. Almost the same calories as a good ol dirty burger lol. Ah well, I've learnt something today at least. Thank for all the comments

I'd bet that the rice has a fair bit of sugar in it - that's why it's so sticky, after all! But I don't know if I could give it up... that's part of why it tastes so good! Plain white rice just can't compare :smirk:

Mmmm I can't wait to have sushi again. I echo what was said here a lot of the sauces and tempura style sushi will be high in calories. Sashimi will be your best calorie bet as it's just plain raw fish.

Your much better off with more traditional rolls vice American versions of fancier types I find. If the roll has any of these in its description you should pass on it.

    Tempura
    Fried anything
    Cream Cheese
    Mayo
Watch out for sauces too like ponzu

Real sushi is just rice, veg and fish. Avocado however I find perfectly acceptable with sushi also.

    That's just how I "roll".

It's mainly the rice and sauces that drive the calorie content up [eight "pieces" of sushi, or about half a roll, can range from 250-600 calories].
