Great hiking trails all around Phoenix. It will still be pretty warm in October so outdoor activities are best in the morning.

Healthy food? Sure.... Flower Child is good as is Pita Jungle. ( locations around town)

You might want to try out some of the killer Mexican restaurants in town too. La fonda del sol in Scottsdale (at the intersection of Scottsdale and Shea. It's a dive and it's cheap) / Los Dos Molinos in Phoenix and Bario Cafe in Phoenix too.

Other items: the towns of Cave Creek and Carefree are touristy but fun. The musical instrument museum is impressive.
Tempe has ASU and there is a lot going on there for a college town.

Definitely check out Old Town Scottdale, there are a ton of restaurants, shopping, art galleries and bars.

Be sure to drink lots of water when in Phoenix. With the low humidity, the heat can sneak up on you.

Hiking is great here. Just keep an eye out for rattlesnakes and those Damn javelinas.
