How can I calculate calories burned during weight lifting?

    To be really accurate youd need a heart rate monitor. Most lifters dont bother tracking because calorie burn is minimal.

    You would be disappointed if you knew how few calories burned. I find its not worth tracking and I log it as 1 just to keep track of my exercise. HRM is not going to be accurate for weight lifting.

    No. An HRM is not a calorie counter. It can get you closer to the truth for some things like running or riding a bike, but the chemistry (to power your muscles) involved in lifting weights is completely different and your heart rate is not a meaningful clue into what's going on. A heart rate monitor isn't any better than a pair of dice when it comes to calories from lifting weights.

    a HRM is the absolute worst for weight training. It will dramatically overestimate.

    Just search under "strength training" in the cardio section. That will give you a good starting number.

    I don't even bother trying to count them but weightlifting does burn more calories than most would think. Not only are you burning calories lifting but you are also getting a metabolic boost from the resulting muscle repair. You are also increasing muscle mass which further boosts your metabolism. The real benefits of weightlifting don't really show up on a scale. If you are increasing muscle mass without adding weight, you have lost an equivalent amount of fat by weight and, obviously, more by volume.

    Assuming 8 and 2 is accurate(interesting btw), I would say it is a gain of 8 unless you were planning on otherwise keeping the fat. Also, that is RMR and not many of us spend all day in bed. That additional muscle will burn more calories with everything you do including cardio. Besides, that article briefly hits on arguably the biggest benefit of adding muscle. His wife thinks he looks better. That doesn't show on a scale but it does lead to additional cardio.
