Protein Powder and Parents

I have protein powder that I use when I am in a hurry and have nothing to grab and go, also as a Celiac I was very malnourished protein wise so I also use it in baking to make my own protein bars. My parents and I go round and round about this particular issue. They claim that just by using the protein powder, and doing nothing else. They lose fat and gain muscle. I say that is impossible.
Any thoughts out there?

    You can't build muscle doing nothing...it doesn't build itself just 'cuz protein...

    I hear protein powder doesn't work as well if you cook with it. There are topics about that and it would be worth researching because you may not be getting as much protein as you think.

    How much protein do you need?

    You can lose weight if you are in a calorie deficit so that may be them incorrectly correlating one thing they are doing with another thing happening to them. It sounds like the old, correlation vs causation issue.

    As far a gaining muscle. I'm 99.9999% sure that gaining muscle comes from exercise. Again, they my be correlating one thing with another that sound unrelated.

    FYI -This discussion may be better in a different message board as you will get better genuine responses than under Chit Chat; which tends to be a place meant for non-serious topics.

    Protein powder is not magical. Calorie deficits cause weight loss. Protein is necessary to prevent muscle loss (while losing weight) and to build muscle (recomp or bulking).

    Protein just like carbs and fat are just forms of energy, You have to work the muscle fibers, to make them grow.
    Does your household have broadband internet? You can buy some devices and have the IT guys hook up wireless and you can google this info.

    I don't take protein powder or any supplements, but I never lose fat because I eat natural protein.

    Why is so hard for you just to give an answer, that is helpful, without being an *kitten* hole about it.. ?

    I know this, and I tell them this, because I do have the magical internet you speak of @Cutaway_Collar, but they will not believe me because ... I don't know.

    I also use ground pecans and nut butter in the bars. I can't use flour because of Celiac and the protein powder is a nice replacement for that. How much protein do I need. I don't know as much as I can get LOL they haven't tested me again since I have been GF.

    Well, Celiac may mean you have to eat more since you have a harder time absorbing nutrients, but the average person needs a minimum of 0.36 per pound of body weight a day. Did your doctor give you any advice about eating more protein? (FYI I thought I had Celiac disease at one point)

    Protein powder doesn't cook well so you probably aren't getting what you put into the recipe.

    I believe cooking protein powder has no affect on its content...just like cooking an egg doesn't ruin the protein. it CAN denature it but the content is still the same.

    Ok, just looked into it, cooking with protein powder may be ok, depending on the brand. If it says don't cook with it...

    I eat protein pancakes 5x a week. I buy the protein that doesn't contain any gasoline so its all good.
