My mom and I both are new on MFP and we feel like our calorie goals are way to high. We're always 1000 ish calories under ... Is this normal?
Me: 22f 306lbs 5'10" cals: 2550 for -1lbs/week
Mom: 49f 246lbs 5'4" caps:2790 for -1lbs/week

Sounds good!! If you are not losing, drop it down a little more! All the these numbers in and out are estimates. If you are not seeing results, adjust your numbers.2

Your mom shouldn't be getting more calories than you. You have 60lbs and 6" on her. Make sure it's "lose 1 lb" selected and not "gain 1lb".
Your calories seem a little high. I'm 6'0" and 298lbs, set for 2lbs/week loss and have a calorie goal of 1690. If I went for 1lb/week instead, I would be at 2190.0 -
What I do and what I recommend to people is to eat at a calorie level that allows you to make good progress towards your goal. If you are trying to lose weight, eat so you drop 1-2 lbs/week. This assumes an average calorie burn from you getting in all of your workouts. This will be different for everyone, so you'll have to do some trial and error to figure it out. I'd suggest you try and get to ~2000 cal/day. Hit this goal, along with your macros and getting in your workouts, for 2 weeks. If you lose 1-2 lbs/week, you're good to go. If you lose too much, increase your intake and repeat. If you don't lose enough, reduce your intake a bit and repeat. After a few cycles, you'll figure out what works for you in your situation.
Eating the most you can while still making progress is important because it gives you more room to make adjustments when you hit a sticking point/plateau. Let's say you're eating ~1200 cal/day and hit a big plateau. If that's the case, you don't have anywhere you can remove calories from to get things moving again. If you're losing at ~2000 cal/day, then you'd have lots of room to adjust your intake to get the weight loss started again. Does that make sense?0 -
What activity level are you using and what is it based on?0

True, that's a factor, OP. The numbers I gave you for myself are sedentary numbers.0
