Can SL 5x5's also be done using dumbells or barbells and have the same effect?

As answered in reponse to you post in the "SL 5x5 Workout" thread:

No. All 5x5's are barbell programs.

You could use dumbells up to point doing BP, rows and OHP but they just won't work for squats and DLs.

Even w/BP, OHP and rows, there's a balance/strength issue lifting single arm and beyond 100#per arm you'll generally run out of dumbbells to use even if you're strong enough to lift them w/1 arm.

Best just to use barbells as intended for 5x5 or any other lifting program.

get a barbell, you will thank yourself for it. I started the 5X5 program and am seeing great results.

If there is not a barbell available at a weight you can start with you most certainly can adapt the programme and do it with hand weights, kettle bells, cables, and even machines until you can move to a barbell for each move.

The results will vary as the muscle engagement varies with each of the different pieces of equipment.

Don't expect to transfer to a barbell using the same weights. Your balance and form will need to adjust.

Start the programme at a low weight, then once you have good form using the equipment available to you, start lifting what is heavy for you.

I am obviously not a purist, I am speaking from experience (not5x5). Making sensible adjustments to make a programme work for me was better than going into the weight room with no plan at all.

    Cheers, h.
