Hi all,
just wanted to know if anyone had any good reccomendations for protein websites that are reasonably priced and are high quality for women? Also do men and women need to have different proteins or is it okay for me to buy a protein that is designed for men? I have general goals of weight loss/lean muscle gain/toning and definition!

First, there are no proteins designed for men or women, they all work the same, we all process the calories the same.
I suggest trying bodybuilding.com because you can search for different proteins, a variety of sizes & prices and they are the most reasonably priced that I have found. They also have incredibly fast shipping and great customer service.0 -
Bodybuilding.com is a decent source (I used to always buy from them), but lately I've been researching them at bodybuilding.com, then just buying from amazon. The prices are similar, but with amazon prime I usually get free shipping.
Anyway, there all a million different brands of protein... so the options there mainly vary by taste and protein/carb ratio. Some will have more carbs than others (not a bad thing, but if the goal is to get your protein... I don't want extra carbs taking away carbs I can get from real food).
The two "main" types in my opinion are casein (pronounced kay-seen) and whey. Casein is digested and absorbed slowly, whey is absorbed more quickly. There are some others in between, but those are the primary ones I use.
I take casein throughout the day so I'll always have some protein in my system (usually a shake mid-morning, and one before bed). I'll take a whey protein shake right before working out (before or after doesn't really matter, but some suggest that before could be slightly better). It will be absorbed more quickly so taking it close to your workout is beneficial.
I would say whey is good to take around your workout, but casein I'm using as a supplement. I'd rather get my protein from foods... but if I don't have time, casein is a good quick way to get some protein (it can taste good and fight hunger pretty well too).
As for brands, I've used a lot (Optimuum Nutrition, Trutein, Syntha-6, iForce, Dymatize). Lately, I'd say my favorite is Dymatize because it mixes easily and the casein flavors I've tried (Cinnamon Bun, Cookies and Cream) taste fantastic. The whey flavor (rich chocolate) isn't bad, but I've never had a whey that tasted "good."
