Tailbone Pain After Weight Loss

My husband and I have both lost about 24 lbs now and he is about 8 lbs away from his goal weight. The problem is, he has started to experience tailbone pain when he sits for extended periods of time (which he has to at work). We've bought the special pillows and all, but he was wondering if there are any exercises he can do to build mass in his butt.
He has googled this, of course, and there are tons of suggestions, but he wanted me to ask if anyone has had success with particular ones. Something he can do at home without special equipment. Any help would be appreciated! I should also mention that his tailbone in general is straighter than normal.

I'm just following to see what gets said. The first time I realised I could feel my tailbone, I thought there was something wrong with me.2

Me too! My husband convinced me it was a tumour or something.. So i went to the doctor who pulled out his skeleton and showed me the tailbone. I wast most embarrased!

When I first got to my goal weight, it was really weird to feel my tailbone when I sat down, but there was no pain with it.
It seems strange to me he would feel tailbone pain from weight loss, unless he was thin to begin with. Maybe a visit to his doctor is in order?0 -
That's funny! I hope someone has a good answer for us all.0

For me, it's padded cushions on all the harder chairs in my house.
Your hubby could use a donut pillow in the meantime.

me too I thought I had a tumor LOL2 -
I had the same problem. Squats and Lunges to build up the butt muscles. My legs still go to sleep if I sit longer than 20 minutes at a time though...lol0

maybe its the way he sits? or maybe he has bad posture? maybe have him try to sit more on his glutes and less on his tailbone? or even if he can get one of those exercise ball chairs and see if that makes a difference.1 -
This will be a weird response, but if he sits any differently he says he squishes the testicles. But he was actually born with a strange tailbone, so this is nothing new. He has a pillow, but he was just looking for long-term improvements.0

My husband has lost 45 pounds so far and has been experiencing tailbone pain since around the 20 pound loss mark. He went to the doctor, (had an xray to rule out a fracture etc) The doc said that unfortunatly this can happen to some folks when they lose weight, it can either correct itself relatively quickly or go on for a very long time. He was given an anti-inflammatory and told to sit on a pillow to take the pressure off whenever possible. Its been 4 months or so as of now and it's still just as painful as it was when it started.0

This was one of the few negatives I experienced with weight loss-I lost my 'cushion' on my bum and sitting can be uncomfortable depending on the seat-I seriously cannot sit on bleacher seats anymore0

I am scratching my head trying to see how it's possible to feel your tailbone while sitting upright.
I can only assume based on the information provided that he has some sort of postural distortion pattern. Most likely lower cross. In which case he needs to stretch, foam roll, and seriously work on his mobility, while building up weak muscles (namely the glutes and hamstrings).
I would recommend he gets an evaluation to see if this is something he can get help with.
You can try pillows and cushions, but i imagine determining the true cause and fixing the underlying condition is going to be the best course of action.
P.S. when i sit in a chair my tailbone is like in the pictures above for "good posture". It's on my back side, not directly underneath me.0 -
Thanks for this post OP. I've had pain--there--sitting for almost a year. I had no idea what was causing it. Even with soft pillows, it hurts. Now that I know it's a problem for others I don't feel so alone.1

I got a pillow like this:
That really helps my tailbone but my pelvis area still gets sore on both sides because of the lack of natural padding that I used to have.2 -
From weight loss my back end is much more floppy. I developed a new stretch mark just at the top of my butt crack. It is painful if I'm not careful how I sit.1

I don't experience this while sitting; but oh, floor exercises like sit-ups certainly became a lot more painful!0

He does sit like the "bad posture" picture, but only because his tailbone hurts otherwise. Like I said, in his particular case he actually has a deformed tailbone to begin with and now that his butt has lost the cushioning... it just hurts. He had a bruise right above where the crack starts just from sitting the other day! Crazy!
He really just wants to add the mass back but not the weight overall.
Glad this post is helping others, too!0 -
I had the same experience when I lost the first 30ish pounds. My pain in the butt went away with less sitting and more lifting weights.0

Is there anything you did that helped build mass/muscles in THAT area?0

to build mass/muscle you have to be eating in a surplus and doing a progressive lifting program.0 -
I have a well padded backside regardless of weight but I can still get sore in that area if I sit poorly (like that sort of lazy slump when watching TV in bed). So I'd guess building mass there wouldn't help and it's going to have to be postural adjustments, cushions and just time for the body to find it's new normal level of tolerance for it.
I noticed today my bony shoulder blades and pelvis being a nuisance doing floor work and I still have weight to lose. And my hip bones in bed, I have to adjust how I sleep on my side now. Funny the things that change!1 -

We have a pillow like that, too. But my husband would like a more permanent solution.0

He should bounce this off of his doctor.0
