I wondered that too ... it's probably some sort of average. I forget what organisation sent out the material or I'd post a link here.
However, calorie counts are rough estimates, so I went with it ... and it seemed to work for me.

I kind of wish I had stairs in my apartment. When I lived at home I thought they were an easy option to get some exercise done without having to go anywhere.
Although to be honest nothing makes me feel more out of shape than when I have to go up flights of stairs lol
I know ... like I said, I was cycling long distances but put me on a flight of stairs and I looked like I needed medical attention.
That's why I figured I'd do something about it.
The first three days of doing 15-20 flights (15 flights*20 stairs each = 300 stairs; 20 flights * 20 stairs each = 400 stairs) is the hardest and interestingly, it is actually harder going down.
And then you start to get into a rhythm ... and the breathing is easier ... and there's less pain ... until one day you're doing them like you'd do a walk round the block.

I usually do the stair master as a strengthening tool. I dont consider it cardio even though i sweat like crazy. It doesnt burn very many calories but 10 minutes of it fires up my legs for my real cardio.1
