Hi all,

I just recently started on a journey to lose 50lbs, and things have been going pretty well. But I face a challenge tonight: Me and my wife have been invited to a dinner party, where we have no idea what we will be served. How do you deal with such situations, and do you even attempt to log the food you eat? It's not like I can (or would feel comfortable with!) bringing a scale, asking about ingredients and amounts, and so on. Should I just log something that feels similar to what I eat, and just keep going? Let me hear your experiences!

IMHO, avoid being "that weird eating guy who asks all the questions".

    In these situations I either:
    • Log 2000 quick cals and call it good
    • Log 1.5 portions of similar pre-packaged foods (example the main course is Beef Wellington - find a supermarket beef wellington and log 1.5 portions to account for the typically larger portions people serve when entertaining).

Either was the most important thing is to enjoy the evening out and just get back on track the next day.

P.S. Something that I do sometimes is, fast during the day and then chug back a massive protein shake (3 scoops, skimmed milk, spinach) about an hour before we go out. This takes the edge of my hunger, gives me the protein I need (I find other people's meals tend to be higher carb and lower protein than I would choose for myself) and a small dose of greens. But having said that, this option is probably only practical to those people who have some experience with intermittent fasting.

Thanks, these are good suggestions and in tune with what I was imagining that I could do! And I fully agree; the most important thing is to enjoy the evening. I might drink a bit less wine than I would normally, but that's not a big deal...

    for clarification

avoid being "that weird eating guy who asks all the questions" - I meant of the host and his/her food. Asking questions on these forums is good.

One of the things I do is to try to get in as much exercise as I can before I go out so that I've got extra calories to work with.

Another thing I do is to just make a mental note of what I ate, and try to eat small portions, and then when I get home, I'll look up recipes to see if I can find something close and log that. And I'll log it a bit high, like 1.5 or 2 portions worth of it rather than just 1 portion.

I best guess it, have a protein shake before and have a small portion.
