Sodium

Does anyone know how much, or if, sodium is reduced by rinsing canned vegetables thoroughly and cooking in water?

I just buy the no salt added canned vegetables should I need some vegetables of the canned persuasion.
That did nothing to answer your question but I felt compelled to contribute.2 -
I think rinsing them helps a little, not sure how much though.
I drain mine, but don't worry too much about rinsing them afterwards. I don't worry too much about added sodium though so... might want to try to non salted if you're able like above!1 -
Well, it's not peer-reviewed or anything, but I found this: cookinglight.com/eating-smart/nutrition-101/salt-in-foods/truth-about-salt_4
So it would seem it's worth the effort.1 -
I buy frozen vegetables. This way no added salt usually.
The only way to answer your question is to analyse your vegetables in a laboratory.
Nobody can answer this question really.1 -
Thank you all, that cooking light spot was really helpful. I don't eat a lot of canned veggies, but they are much more convenient at work where I am always alone and I don't close for lunch. My sister in law suggested the rinse and I was hopeful. I don't intend to ajdust my log, but it is comforting knowing I am at least making a little improvement. And I do try to buy the unsalted but If I am running short on time and forget my lunch I hit the dollar store, not much choice there as far as variety in the canned veggies.0

I can tell by the taste that rinsed canned veg are less salty. It helps to rinse. I know what you mean, sometimes there is no alternative in certain circumstances0
