What is safe for me to do exercise wise

I'm 29 years old and have several spinal injuries. Due to trying to let things heal and they aren't going to get better at the wieght that I am, I have difficulty finding exersizes that help me lose weight without making me pretty much sedentary for two days after wards which defeats the purpose. I can't afford a trainer right now and just doing this at home. I want more than to shed a few pounds. I want to be healthier. And the less I weight, the better I feel, the less pain I'm in and the more I get to do with my daughter.

It might be easier if you start by concentrating on creating a calorie deficit by reducing your intake for now. Exercise is great but not required for weight loss.
Log what you eat for a week or two and then you can look back through to see where you could eat smaller portions and/or substitute out calorie-dense foods with other foods that you also like.2 -
IMO, the best thing you could do is have your doctor hook you up with a physical therapist who will work with you, or at least offer you some suggestions. Online advice from strangers who don't know your medical history, extent of injuries and limitations could make things worse rather than better.9

Agreed. You need personalised advice from a qualified professional who knows you in person, it's very risky to be looking for random advice on line.2 -
I'm another vote for getting set up with a proper physical therapist.
While it can be very hard to exercise with your injuries at your current weight, you rightly point out that losing weight might help. I'd say concentrate on losing some weight by controlling calorie intake and doing what you're comfortable doing without knocking yourself out afterwards. Walking, swimming, walking in the pool, whatever you can comfortably do is good, but weight loss comes from what you eat, in large part.0 -

bike on a recumbent bike
You can't give someone with unspecified "spinal injuries" any form of exercise guidance however well meaning
How do you know that a recumbent bike position is suitable for her particular physiology and challenges
You need expert, non internet help
But if you're looking to lose weight get your calorie intake sorted, your exercise programme should be for overcoming your physical limitations not weight loss2 -
2 things to lose weight you don't have to exercise all you have to do is eat less calories than your body Burns period since January 1st I've lost about 80 pounds. I'd say out of that maybe ten pounds were lost due to exercise. The average person can't exercise enough to lose a significant amount of amount of weight.
As far as the the spinal issues and exercise I agree with a few posters. Please do not take any advice from anybody on this website. They have no idea what they're talking about. Your best bet is to go see a back specialist who can refer you to a physical therapist who could workout anexercise program for you0 -
many people here have lost weight without any exercise at all, and many more have lost by just walking for exercise. i myself lost lots of weight just walking daily.0

I honestly would consult with your doctor and your physical therapist to find out just how much exercise you can handle and what's right for you since everyone is different.
With that being said, my physical therapist recommended I do planks as they're good for posture and help strengthen not only your spinal area, but also your core muscles. I also have a exercise band they gave me with a list of workouts that will help strengthen my body's weak and injured areas.
Best of luck!0 -
coming to MFP for advice related to your spinal injuries?? not a good idea. as others have said, see a doctor!0

I do see a doctor and a therapist. They don't let me do much of anything besides walk around.... I do so much more at work than I do at the therapist office. And yes they are both aware of what I do and for how long I do it for. My injuries as far as my spine: I have 2 compression fractures 1 in my upper spine, and one lower, my T7 disk is degenerating and the last 2 disks and my tail bone are fused together from a slip and fall I had 8 years ago. I've never let my injuries stop me before. I've rebuilt my back muscle to help out with the weakness of my spine and wear supports now and again depending on what I'm doing. I've tried the bands and end up smacking myself with them when they slip out of one hand or the other. Which is why I was asking for advise here. I am simply looking for suggestions for light exersizes with a high impact that will help instead of hurt. I can do push ups, can't do sit ups. My spine won't bend where it needs to in order to come all the way up. When I sit down, I have to sit leaning forward or my spine grinds into whatever I'm sitting on. Most of the time I prefer standing as it hurts less.0

Do you have access to a pool? Does swimming cause you any issues? It's great, low impact exercise for the whole body and the buoyancy can really help people with injuries.1
-
No, I don't currently have access to a pool. I used to a little over a year ago and things were great. After I lost use of a pool, my wieght went back up 25 lbs.

I would suggest you investigate this with them further before taking any advice from a group of unknown Internet people. Can you get a referral to a spinal injuries unit? I think you would probably qualify for an outpatient tertiary physiotherapy referral based on NICE criteria? You can then work on a supported exercise plan for your spinal health. You may also be able to access specialist services such as adaptive Pilates for spinal rehabilitation.1 -
Speak to your medical professional regarding exercise.
If you want to lose weight you need a calorie deficit. Set MFP with yourself as sedentary, select your weight loss weekly goal and weigh/track everything.0
