However you choose to describe it, you're doing less work as a smaller person than as your larger former self.

i think you're doing the same work - in these terms, the same calorie burn. it just feels easier.

Work done is a function of mass and distance. If you're lighter, you are doing less work. In the context of the original post, being lighter makes a much bigger difference than functional efficiency. The latter is lost in the noise.

I use a HRM and over time I find I'm not burning as much just because my body has grown accustomed to the distance, and my heart rate doesn't get as high as when I started out. I've also found I get faster over time once my body gets accustomed to running a certain number of miles (hills not included).

Which is a good demonstration of HR being a poor indicator of calories burned. You're not using less energy, but your heart has improved its efficiency so increasing your stroke volume. That means you're transporting the same volume of oxygen with fewer beats.

The volume of oxygen is what's relevant, not the number of beats.

AnnyisOK might be using less energy to run. This is a weight loss site for most people, after all.

Your body weight * miles * .64 = calories burned.

    Extremely accurate.

This is probably a blonde question but does this work for kms in the same way?

I just converted quickly with a calculator, this would get you in same ball park.

    Body weight * km * .397 = calorie burned

    Thank you!

Not out of the question, but it's not because her HR is lower, her HR is lower as a result of improved aerobic efficiency.

To reframe the example, I run faster in Road Claws than I do in Race Ultras. That's not a function of the shoe, it's a function of the terrain I use them for.

No, you're not. Work is defined (in this case) as force x distance. With less weight, the force is less. As such, over the same distance, work would decrease proportionately to the difference in weight.

    good catch. i re-read and you're right.
