Hi MFP community,
I am an overweight man living in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, UK. I am just over 6 feet tall and recently weighed in at 121 kg (271 lbs), the heaviest I have ever been. I have osteo-arthritis in my major joints and my weight is causing me to have hip problems.
I am approaching retirement (hopefully) and this has prompted me to do something about my size before it kills me. I do not want to suffer from diabetes, or increase my risk of a stroke, heart attack, or cancer.
I have resolved to adopt better eating habits and to walk for at least 30 minutes a day with a raised heart rate on five days of the week. Walking to work was my first step on the road to fitness, and although it is only just a little more than a mile, it was tough. However, after three weeks I have noticed a real improvement in my fitness with much reduced breathlessness and better stamina. I actually enjoy my walks and have not missed a day. I like it that my gym is literally on my doorstep; I have no need to drive, wear anything special, or devote a couple of hours to get some exercise. All I need do is step outside the house, and off I go.
After three weeks of MFP I have lost 9 lbs and am feeling much better, both physically and mentally. If anyone can identify with my situation and would like to add me as a friend, please feel free to do so.
