creme brulee . . . well, if you make it with milk. it's just milk and eggs, and doesn't take a whole lot of sugar to 'flavour' it right either.

i've got so i like to make it in a fairly large batch and keep it in the fridge for quick-spoonful 'snack' moments before real food is ready.

Pop tarts.. cause you only 1 out of the pack as the serving size.. Why don't they individually wrap the pop tarts?

Right, like cup 'o soup. You can't even save the soup in Styrofoam to eat one serving.

That's not creme brulee though, that is just pudding.

Ooohh. Soup has been a blessing for sure. I eat soup several times a week.

Salad dressing got a big "booooo" from me. Not even enough to make salad worth it. I'd rather have plain fresh veggies than a lame-o salad.

For salads, what I have been doing is making a vinaigrette in a squeeze bottle that I bring to work with me: half really good extra virgin olive oil, half really good balsamic, and a little dijon mustard to emulsify; fresh-cracked sea salt and pepper. I will get a big batch of mixed greens or romaine, put it on my scales, which I of course carry in my purse, and drizzle out 10 grams (about 45-50 calories) which is enough to give flavor to the entire batch when you toss it. There are variations you can do with lemon balsamic, pureed roasted shallots, etc. It's no quarter cup of Chunky Blue Cheese, but if using the best ingredients it's pretty awesome in and of itself.

I have tried a thousand vinaigrettes, home made and store bought and none of them make salad acceptable as a meal to me. I've had some luck with Bolt House dressings, but it's gotta be creamy (except thee blue cheese which is nasty).

sure, but i didn't know another term for it. it's baked custard, i guess. but i call it creme brulee and sssh. my mouth hasn't found out i'm lying yet.

guess i shoudl have said it's a nice surprise that you don't have to use cream to do it.

You might be making creme caramel? I make it every so often, it's much lower calorie than creme brulee, and absolutely delicious.

A high calorie surprise was probably cupcakes- often 400 calories each! I guess that goes for a lot of baked goods though.
A low calorie surprise was almond milk. Creamy, delicious coffee for negligible calorie counts? Perfection

I thought ice cream was going to be much worse for me than it is. I can have a nice sized portion for about 150 calories. I haven't gorged on it since I was a kid. Since I haven't eaten it that often since I was a teenager, I am happy with 2-3 tablespoons.

Bad surprise: Nuts and beer. The serving size is tiny for nuts and even just run of the mill beer will set you back about 144 calories, craft beer can be as much as twice that.

Good surprise: Grilled chicken breast. Low fat, low cal, high protein. Grill up a couple of pounds over the weekend and you have an endless array of stir frys, salads, rice bowls, soups, etc. for the rest of the week.

:'( Agreed on nuts and seeds, or anything composed primarily of nuts, e.g. trail mix. My weakness. Also, restaurant salads. I figure the dressing packs the fat & calories punch, and I don't care for most dressings, but when restaurants don't provide nutrition for dressing separately, I'm left doing a lot of guessing.
:) soufflé's (made with one yolk two whites) can be surprisingly light for how decadent they seem.

Everything. Seriously. Even veggies. 40 calories for 100g of carrots is not 'few calories'. Worst surprise maybe was bagels. 400 calories in a plain bagel. Sheesh.

I think that the only thing I always assumed was worse than it is is caramels. I always thought they were like 50-100 calories each.. but nope, typically only 25-30. And maybe shrimp and white fish.

I regularly eat bagels and they're around 260 calories-with cream cheese it puts me at around 300 calories. These are store bought ones though, I imagine ones from places like Panera Bread are quite a bit higher.

We went to a Vegan restaurant, thinking that it would automatically be low-calorie. That was the worst day since I started this weight loss thing... and we eat local pizza and Chick-Fil-A every now and then. They had none of the calories listed online, but they told us after we ate what was in it. The tiny meal was 1500 calories and packed with nuts (=fat). Never again.

Sadly , peanut butter. Especially when I went by grams rather than my normal gigantic tablespoon servings.

yep my sandwich went from 500 calories to 1400 the day I woke up.. Peanut butter afor my High and Shrimp for my low-

I'll never eat a Bagel again just a waste of 400 calories

For me, pizza. Even if I take everything off and just do a slice of plain cheese it's usually close to 300 calories. So I would have to eat ONE slice of cheese pizza because two slices at 600 would usually put me over. And that's JUST cheese pizza, no fun without the toppings! Always a hard thing to work into my count.

I can so identify with your situation. Now I am using measuring spoons and cups to dole out my servings.

Both low and high, what foods were you not expecting to be what they were?

My #1 I found out today.. 10 fritos scoops is 160 calories! What? Excuse me?!

Another big one was corn.. retrospectively the two are related, but 600+ calories per cup is absurd.

We can really find some shockers looking at the nutrition labels. To the point of not looking at them when I want to "enjoy" them...I know. I'm fooling myself. WhaT I have decided is to serve myself the portion of whatever snack and not eat out of the bag, container, etc

Ah, I eat ones like Lenders and then generic store bought ones, that makes sense :)
