Can sparkling water be totaled in with the amount of water you drink or should you count it differently?

    All liquids, except alcohol, count.

I drink sparkling water like regular water. I have a keg and CO2 tank to make my own from tap water. That's how much I drink. Never had any issues. Sometimes bottled sparkling waters have additions like calorie adding flavors and sodium, so check your label.

As long as the liquid doesn't contain alcohol or caffeine, I count it! [Caffeine is a diuretic, so both caffeine and alcohol can lead to dehydration]

Studies have shown that the diuretic effect of caffeine is minimal, very close to that of plain water, and does not offset the hydration obtained from the drink itself. Links to the studies can be found in the first post of this thread: http://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/821181/myths-and-facts-about-hydration-requirements

As to the OP - whether you count it or not, your body certainly will "count" it for purposes of hydration. As it will virtually any liquid, including the water contained in much of our food. If you're drinking something which isn't calorie-free, be sure to log the calories, though.
