When to lose more slowly

So I've done some reading here and there and it seems that some suggest decreasing caloric deficit as you get near to goal. Does anyone have experience with that, or specific input yay or nay? I'm sort of looking for some personal experience here to blend with the research I've done. At present, I am about 5lbs from the highest weight that would be considered healthy by BMI standards, and things are going well but I want to be properly prepared for changes I may need to make. At present, I'm running a 1,000 deficit(tracking with Fitbit) I exercise about 1hr - 1.5 a day, plus some resistance training, and will soon be adding in weights.

General guidelines, expect to lose no more than 1% of your current body weight. Large deficits make it harder for your body to support existing lean muscle mass. Strength training should help you keep existing lean muscle....but you need enough fuel.
