Just curious where would be the best type of restaraunt to go for a good selection of healthier food? I was thinking tai?

Thai is good, so long as you don't polish off a plate of Pad Thai - I love Som Tam and always get a big plate of that.

What do you mean by "healthier" food? How do you define that? I can go to any number of local establishments and get a right healthy and nutritious meal...but that doesn't mean they're necessarily low calorie...but calories and "healthy" are two completely different things.

Sorry I'll clarify. I said healthy. Not low calorie.... I know they mean different things hehe.

Basically I want to try something that isn't your regular fried burger and chips.

Thai can be high fat with lots of coconut milk. But probably most restaurants will have healthier options, depending on what you mean. The biggest issue with most restaurants is going to be portion size. Many entrées will be about three servings so watch out for that.

You are still defining healthier as a broad term. If you do not want fast food, then choose an alternative that service the foods you "deem" as healthy choices.. your healthy and my healthy will not be same, and what I think is acceptable in terms of preparation for my particular calories will not be the same as yours.

Look to see if your local restaurants have their menu/nutrition available on line prior to going.

Just go to literally any place and order a salad.

With dressing on the side. (There are restaurants with 1000+ calorie salads where the calories are mostly in the piles of dressing they dump on.)

Or order a protein with veggies.

Though if you don't eat out often, just order what you like and only eat an appropriate portion.

What are the options? I do a lot of locally-sourced, farm-to-table, seasonal type places, with lots of fresh veg (although not as much in season now, and especially later in the year, so they tend to use that concept loosely). Anyway, those are generally healthy (as I define it), although not low cal (most restaurants aren't), and they can certainly also do fried stuff.

I also like lots of local ethnic places, many of which also fit my idea of healthy (balanced meal, lots of vegetables), although they can be even higher cal and often will be family style or have larger sizes than the former set of places, although not always. For example, I enjoy Ethiopian food. One of the lower cal meals I get regularly is from a Persian place. It really depends on what you like, but often even local places will have their menus on line and they are nice about answering questions.

I think anyplace you can find something to eat. I like steak houses as they tend to be easy to log and usually let me sub out potato sides for extra veg. Or at a Mexican place I get fajitas without tortillas and just eat the meat and peppers /onions usually with guacamole, yumm. Most bar and grill places have good salads. My husband and I like to order one entrée and split it and get side salad or soup. Sometimes one of us orders an appetizer and we add that to our shared entrée. I don't worry about how "healthy" the food is, just about how much room I have for my meal in my calorie allowance and if it's a super treat meal I might not even worry about that, lol.

I typically order a grilled protein and steamed veg or salad, with dressing on the side.
